Have there been other coronaviruses?
New and troubling viruses usually originate in animal hosts. Ebola and flu are other examples, and severe acute respiratory syndrome (Sars) and Middle Eastern respiratory syndrome (Mers) are both caused by coronaviruses that came from animals. In 2002, Sars spread unchecked to 37 countries, causing global panic, infecting more than 8,000 people and killing more than 750. Mers appears to be less easily passed from human to human, but has greater lethality, killing 35% of about 2,500 people who were infected.
What are the symptoms caused by the Wuhan coronavirus?
The virus can cause pneumonia. Those who have fallen ill are reported to suffer coughs, fever and breathing difficulties. In severe cases there can be organ failure. As this is viral pneumonia, antibiotics are of no use. The antiviral drugs we have against flu will not work. If people are admitted to hospital, they may get support for their lungs and other organs as well as fluids. Recovery will depend on the strength of their immune system. Many of those who have died were already in poor health.

China’s national health commission has confirmed human-to-human transmission. As of 13 February there are now just under 60,000 confirmed cases and 1,380 deaths in mainland China.

I was wanting some time off work. Think it would be too obvious if I took a trip to Wuhan China and then got quarantined when I returned?

Nothing has changed that rate … in mainland China, unless some dramatic improvement happens, the exponential series goes to one million cases by 3/15. Please stop misinformation and minimizing … that’s the Red Chinese game.
I would say there is some hype, but it is not an attempt to harm the US economy so Trump will not get elected.

The purpose of the “Bring Out Your Dead” ping list (formerly the “Ebola” ping list) is very early warning of emerging pandemics, as such it has a high false positive rate.
So far the false positive rate is 100%.
At some point we may well have a high mortality pandemic, and likely as not the “Bring Out Your Dead” threads will miss the beginning entirely.
*sigh* Such is life, and death...
If a quarantine saves just one child's life, it's worth it.

The Rule: A human cannot live three minutes without air, three days without water, or three weeks without food.
No...not panic....but to be prudent, it might be wise to pick up a bag of rice or beans or some soups for a few weeks for you and yours....something you would normally eat anyway so it won’t go to waste.
As for masks, there is a protocol to use four layers of a tee-shirt for protection that can do in a pinch. There is only one American manufacturer for N-95 masks. All others are made in China...same holds true for surgical masks. You will not be able to purchse from Prestige Ameritech as their products are going to hospitals...that is prior customers...
Keep and eye and ear out...take usual flu season precautions for now...Hopefully the virus will die off this Spring and Summer...but there are indications that this may not be the case.
Don’t rely on your local news to tell you much of anything. Flutrackers.com is a good site to keep up on what the government is doing...such as the DOD has initiated its Pandemic protocols two days ago. This means that US Marines can come to your neighborhood and ORDER you to quarantine. You will obey their orders.
In the end, nothing may happen...but I saw anecdotal evidence that Freeze dried foods are in very short supply. I went over to Mountain House and saw that much of their longer term pre-packaged systems were sold out. Whether that is normal for this time of year or due to governmental or civilian purchasing, I do not know. Is this the same for other food companies. I don’t know....
So, my recommendation is to not panic, but keep a keen eye and ear to what is happening and carefully prepare accordingly. It is not TEOTWAWKI, but it could screw up supply systems for a quarter or two...or worse.

I spent about a week looking at China and how they were reacting (versus what they were saying or their ‘official’ numbers).
I, too, came to the same conclusion as you.
“What country is prepared?...Are you going there?”
I don’t know of any that are prepared, but if some were, it wouldn’t do us any good, as they would have sealed their borders by now.
