France reports first coronavirus death outside Asia

France announced Saturday that a Chinese man has died from the coronavirus within its borders, the first death from the disease outside of Asia.

French Health Minister Agnes Buzyn announced that the 80-year-old man traveled from China's Hubei Province, the epicenter of the coronavirus outbreak, to France in mid-January and was hospitalized days later. The man’s daughter is also sick with the virus, though her condition is not believed to be as serious.

Europe has reported over 60 confirmed cases of the virus, with Germany having the most at 16, according to data collected by Johns Hopkins University.

China has reported the highest number of cases by far, with more than 65,000 people being infected with the virus in the country. More than 20 other countries have also reported cases of the virus.

Ethnic Chinese, secondary infection of his daughter. Things that make you go hmmmmmmm.
Bring Out Your Dead

Post to me or FReep mail to be on/off the Bring Out Your Dead ping list.

The purpose of the “Bring Out Your Dead” ping list (formerly the “Ebola” ping list) is very early warning of emerging pandemics, as such it has a high false positive rate.

So far the false positive rate is 100%.

At some point we may well have a high mortality pandemic, and likely as not the “Bring Out Your Dead” threads will miss the beginning entirely.

*sigh* Such is life, and death...

If a quarantine saves just one child's life, it's worth it.

Nothing shocking about that.

Not that part, there haven’t been any deaths reported as non-ethnic Chinese, that part.

Some are speculating it was a virus deliberately engineered virus to target a specific ethnicity.

All outside of China cases I’m aware of are reported as “someone who recurrently traveled from China”, without any mention of ethnicity, although occasionally they will report nationality.

80 year old ASIAN man. So far they haven't proved that Asians are more susceptible to this virus than blacks and whites, but, so far, appears so. Time will tell.

Lord forgive me, I can’t feel one bit of empathy for the Chinese.

It’s not like I hate Asians. I have a couple Filipino friends. I’m a regular at our local Indian restaurant and am friendly with the owner and staff. I have a great admiration for Japan and always regret how such cultured people could have gone so wrong in World War II and the years preceding.

But there’s something that repels me about China as it exists today. And I think it boils down to the notion that the Chinese have a different concept of truth than we do.

It seems that the Chinese will always say what they think the listener wants to hear, regardless of the underlying facts. This makes any business dealing with them risky in the extreme.

As for China’s penchant for breaking any and every trade agreement, I can only ask: Does this reflect the corrupt nature of communism, or does the rot go deeper, into the underlying culture.

These are questions I ask myself a lot. I don’t pretend to have any answers. I only know that aside from persecuted Chinese Christians, I find it hard to muster any sympathy for that teeming and benighted nation.

During every flu outbreak they tell us the old and sick are most vulnerable. I haven't heard this stated clearly. Are the old and sick dying or are healthy people dropping dead where they stand?

The briefing I just attended said elderly men with chronic illnesses are dying at higher rates.
