PHOENIX An organization of moms against gun violence is applauding a recent decision by the Phoenix Union High School Board.
The board voted unanimously last week to require the parent or guardian of the districts 27,000 students to read and sign a gun storage safety form.
"This is just an obvious thing we can do to prevent future tragedies, said board member Lela Alston.
The "Secure Storage Notification Resolution" requires that gun storage and safety information be included in the student handbook of all 27,000 students of the district's 20 high schools.
The resolution was prompted by the groups Moms Demand Action and Students Demand Action For Gun Sense in America. It highlights how unlocked guns play a prominent role in unintentional shootings involving children, gun suicides and campus shootings.
Phoenix Union Board President Stephanie Parra said the resolution is a small but meaningful step to educate parents.
From time to time, guns have made an appearance on campuses," said board president Stephanie Parra. When we speak to moms, often it's because the parent did not properly store their firearm at home.

You are comparing a report card and whether or not daddy has secured guns in the home.
You dont seem interested in an adult discussion.
If you can’t figure that out your on the wrong forum.
At what point do you say no to the Nanny State? If your doctor said you had to sign such a form, or worse, so that you could see him or her and get your prescription how would you feel then????
That is certainly “mom’s” intent. I dont know that the school board is on board with Bloombergs intent. And you dont either, you are assuming that.
Tell me the fixation with guns in this handbook?
“This will not stand any kind of legal test at all.”
“What grabs me about this story is that so many in what I will call officialdom think they can do ANYTHING they want.”
The knot heads in the educational system become delusional about their power because for the most part they are dealing with kids who can’t or won’t fight back. It’s a real shock to their system when people won’t roll over.
Suck me, Nazis.
F them!
Im not even going to let them if and how many or what kind of firearms I have!
Some kids are claiming they cant read or write in cursive and the freakin school wants to get involved in my private life?
The school board or whatever the hell they are have ZERO business knowing anything like that.
They can go pound sand.
Well actually I have it downloaded now. Maybe you should do same and read for yourself.
Short answer is the only form for a parent signature I find where gun is mentioned is a form that says Arizona law sates that parent consent must be provided for the school to ask any questions about a list of item including guns, political affiliations, religion, voting history, and about a dozen other “non-of-your-business” items, which seems like it protects privacy.
Other than that, the mention of guns is limited to school policy, no guns, knives, weapons, etc on campus and the penalty from getting caught on campus with them. This is pretty standard these days.
So how about we stop attacking each other a chill a bit.
We have walked down this libtard road for 50 years.
Look where we are.
The USA is NOT giving up her Freedom.
Our Firearms represent Freedom.
The little marxists at the school can pound sand.
If they want children to know about firearms then have a class on how they work and what they are for.
Most of us got that at home. Fine
Let the schools teach firearm safety.
This is an extension of “public health” and “public safety” initiatives. Doctors asking if you own guns, for your safety. Schools asking if you own guns and “educating” you on their dangers, for the public’s safety.
I agree and I refer you back to may last response, which probably crossed paths with yours.
I replied to what was presented.
Fair Enough.
You asked a question that I answered in #90.
They have you sign for one reason only. It creates a contract.
As for the mission creep into homelifeit’s true. But it isn’t always the case that the school is a bunch of busybodies. You should see some of the kids who show up. Unwashed clothesso now some schools are installing washing machines, unfedso now schools are expected to provide breakfast, lunch, and in some cases snacks for the evening and backpacks of food for the weekends and of course lunches during the summer.
I’ve had students being raised by grandma or auntie because both parents are in jail/prison. Wolves do a better job of rearing their young. And those kids are sitting in the desk next to your kid. Because of all of this, no wonder public schools are pretty much doomed. I got a fine education in public schools, but that was in the middle of the last century.
We don't. But if the school is going to send information on one politically charged topic, how about they send information from multiple viewpoints on multiple topics.
Do you really think they would send out a form on effect home and family defense tactics? Or a form describing ways in which you could prevent young children from being exposed to media content that they probably should not see? Or a form describing ways to protect your kids from radicalization by religious fundamentalists?
We had two suicides within a week of each other at my kids high school. Obviously there are a lot of parents that are doing a poor job of securing or educating their kids about firearms. The schools have to deal with this all the time not to mention the gang bangers that always carry.
See my #90. You have to download the student handbook to see the reality. Too much speculation raising peoples blood pressure here. Get the facts.
I doubt it, but there is probably much more data showing that risk than showing a risk due to firearms storage methods.
