Does this satellite image show the scale of China's coronavirus cremations? Sulphur dioxide emissions which are produced when bodies are burned reach alarming levels in Wuhan

High sulphur dioxide levels at the centre of the coronavirus outbreak could be a sign of mass cremations, it has been claimed.

Satellite maps in recent days have shown alarming levels of SO2 around Wuhan, the Chinese city where the outbreak began.

In addition, there were high sulphur dioxide levels in the city of Chongqing which is also under quarantine.

Scientists say that sulphur dioxide is produced when bodies are cremated, and also when medical waste is incinerated.

But social media users who investigated the maps have suggested that dead bodies could be being burned on the outskirts of the city.

China has decreed that the bodies of coronavirus victims should be cremated in low-key funerals to prevent large public gatherings.

The country's National Health Commission said earlier this month that bodies should be 'cremated close by and immediately'.

On top of that, there have been repeated claims - albeit unverified - that officials are concealing a higher-than-reported death toll with mass cremations.

The high sulphur dioxide levels in Wuhan would be consistent with a high number of cremations in the city.

One map from Czech-based weather service Windy.com showed sulphur dioxide levels in Wuhan at a staggering 1,350 micrograms per cubic metre (µg/m3) over the weekend.

For comparison, the World Health Organisation (WHO) says that a dosage of 500 µg/m3 should not be exceeded for more than 10 minutes.

The UK government considers a 15-minute concentration of 533 µg/m3 to be 'high'.

According to the map, the SO2 levels were lower today but Wuhan and Chongqing still stood out compared to much of China.

Parts of Wuhan still showed concentrations above 500 µg/m3 on Monday, the map suggested.

Scientists say that cremating bodies releases SO2 along with other pollutants including nitrogen oxides.

The US Environmental Protection Agency says that

Plenty of qualifications in the article. Beijing and Shanghai are also showing high levels of of SO2 emissions - it's related to industrial production where plants don't install pollution scrubbers (or use the ones they have) in order to save on cost, because the government isn't enforcing* whatever air quality regulations it has. Thing is - Wuhan's industrial output is at standstill, whereas Beijing's and Shanghai's industries are still humming.

* China's skyrocketing wages have not only eliminated its labor cost edge - they are several times those of nearby countries like Burma, Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam, the Philippines and Indonesia and higher than all of Latin America with the sole exception of Chile. So Chinese companies with operations in China need every advantage they can get. And one of those advantages is the Chinese government turning a blind eye to pollution regulations in order to prevent mass layoffs.

In addition, capital controls to prevent capital flight mean that Chinese companies can't just move their plants abroad, even though some would like to. It's a question of survival rather than greed. Walmart doesn't care that Chinese wages are up when a supply contract comes up for renewal. They want a lower price, or they'll go with a (non-Chinese) supplier with a plant in Vietnam or Indonesia who can deliver that price. So some Chinese companies would like to move abroad, but the Chinese government is throttling their ability to do so.

I have seen fumigation videos.

What are they spraying/fogging? Sulphur Dioxide?

Also, does every municipality keep these fumigation trucks/rigs on stand-by for such an event? I have never seen this type of equipment before...

Did they anticipate having to fog the city because of the Level 4 bioresearch facility in Wuhan?

factories are not allowed to open.

also there are about ~10 crematoriums in Wuhan running 24-hrs non-stop.....

That was my immediate reaction. Chinese pollute. It's what they do.

I think China is preparing to sacrifice a province to save China.

also, they are just common disinfectant in those trucks... like bleach

Smokers who smoked more than 38 pack-years of cigarettes had a risk of getting pneumonia of over 3.15 to 1. The risk of ex-smokers was similar to current smokers, about 2.14 to 1. After 5 years of no smoking, the risk of acquiring pneumonia was reduced.”

This is really sad if true. The humanity of it.

I’m not suggesting that it’s not true, but it all seems so surreal, I think it’s easier just to believe it can’t be true.

Or.... facing a fuel supply shortage, Wuhan is burning more coal. It’s not like SO2 is found only in corpses.

I would imagine we have satellites capable of such high solution imaging that we wouldn’t have to speculate on the basis of SO2 emissions.

SO2 is a byproduct of burning coal, something China is known for. Even if factories are idled, you still need power generation.

Though it is interesting that Chunking is also showing large sulfur dioxide releases, in that it was the number one destination of people leaving Wuhan at the start of the Lunar Holiday.

I’ve been searching for information about confirmed case in Chunking but there simply isn’t much about Chunking in the news.

The concentration of sulfur in the Human Body is only 0.3% of body mass. That is not sufficient body mass to raise the air content index of sulfur in the atmosphere what this study claims.

What is, is that China uses high sulfur content coal to generate electricity. More people staying home, locked down, using electric heat to warm their apartments during winter 24/7 will actually use more electricity, requiring more coal burning than normal. Chinese Coal burning electrical plants are located on the peripheries of the cities.

That is a more logical explanation for the increase in sulfur in the atmosphere than burning human bodies.
