How History Will Judge the Trump Impeachment
The Daily Signal ^ | February 7, 2020 | Hans von Spakovsky

The Senate has voted against impeaching President Donald Trump, defeating two articles of impeachment by votes of 52-48 and 53-47. Trump joins two former presidents, Andrew Johnson and Bill Clinton, in being impeached by the House of Representatives before being acquitted by the Senate.

The House failed to produce credible evidence that the president committed any “high Crimes and Misdemeanors” or engaged in any action that justified his impeachment by the House, let alone his conviction and removal from office by the Senate.

Despite Democrats’ loss in the Senate, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., and Reps. Adam Schiff, D-Calif., and Jerry Nadler, D-N.Y., are no doubt basking in the admiration of their liberal allies for their actions, and they are hoping that their attempt to damage the president in the eyes of the public will be successful in the 2020 election.

However, history is often an unforgiving critic.

Historians in the future may judge them far more harshly for abusing the impeachment power in the Constitution. That provision was not intended to allow 285 members of Congress—a simple House majority and two-thirds of senators—to remove a duly elected president for partisan reasons or over matters of style, no matter what his margin of victory in the last election.

Impeachment was to be used only in the direst of circumstances to remove a president clearly guilty of such serious, substantial misconduct that he posed a danger to the nation, and who was clearly unfit to continue in office until the next election when the public could make its own choice.

House Democrats did not come even close to meeting that standard.

“Legend has it that when critics of Gen. Ulysses S. Grant complained to President Abraham Lincoln about Grant's drinking, Lincoln replied, "I wish some of you would tell me the brand of whiskey that Grant drinks. I would like to send a barrel of it to my other generals."

President Trump will be remembered much the same as General Grant - a fighter ...

No, not really and you should learn more American history!

Johnson and Clinton were both found guilty of actual crimes and Johnston escaped being removed....by one vote, because that Senator did NOT want to go down in history as the man who removed a sitting president!

Trump's "impeachment" was yet another stab at a COUP, absolutely NO crime was named, the House threw out ALL rules and gave Trump NO witnesses, their "witnesses" had NO first hand knowledge re anything at all, and it was not just Kafkaesque, but a STALINIST show trial; unlike the earlier two impeachments!

Sore losers trying to reverse an election result through nefarious means.

Should never have happened, but the Democrat Party is enslaved to its vision of running the USA as a single Party government. The Democrat Party literally admires Red China.

Who do you think occupies the faculty of History Departments at Universities? Who do you think will write the “official” history books? The vast majority are leftists. The impeachment will be written as Trump was Hitler and the brave DemocRATS fought to save America, but were thwarted by evil Republicans.

I consider it like a college football team ( the dems ) claiming a huge moral victory by being ahead at halftime but losing the game in the end. They want people to forget that it’s a two part process.

A mob of socially perverted radical socialists tried to mount a coup against our government in an attempt to help foreign interests to control our government thereafter.

Johnson was found guilty of a very dubious crime, which currently understanding that the law was thoroughly unconstitutional. But yes, it was at the time, in theory, a crime.

Clinton was guilty of crimes up one side and down the other.

The Tenure of Office Act was later declared unconstitutional, and Johnson's removal of Stanton should not have counted as a violation since Johnson had not appointed Stanton. In any case, violation of such a law is not in the same category as a criminal offense such as perjury, which Clinton was clearly guilty of.

The Founding Fathers believed that the separation of powers was an important principle. The Tenure of Office Act was an offense against that principle in that Congress was interfering in the rightful powers of the President. The second article of impeachment adopted in December was likewise an affront against the separation of powers.

Apparently there were seven senators who were willing to be the one to save Johnson from removal if need be. At that time 10 Southern states had no representation in the Senate. The man who would have taken over if Johnson was removed was a Senator who voted to convict Johnson.

“THEY” were out to get Trump with thoughts of impeachment even before he became president. What a country we have now! Where are the libs of Humphry’s, Truman’s and JFK’s time? Sigh.

Johnson and Clinton were both found guilty of actual crimes

Johnson was charged with firing the secretary of war, appointing an interim secretary, etc. after Congress passed various unconstitutional laws to create those crimes. They were fake crimes and not high crimes. Clinton was accused of lying under oath about a civil matter, not a high crime.

Trump's crime was not named. However because of one particular "Republican" whose name will be forgotten, history will judge Trump's impeachment basically the same as the others, namely mostly partisan.

Then you have the guys like SHELBY FOOTE, who write the histories from the perspective of the common man.

Shelby Foote will be read and remembered long after the “official history books” will be shelved and long forgotten.

I maybe an immigrant to the USA - but that may have made me study America history more than the Democrats have - but every history book I have read has judged the impeachment of Johnson harshly for and said that if it had gone through it would have weakened the presidency and the country.

I don’t think Impeachment weakens a country in Trumps case.......it simply revealed a divided congress ....and the perpetual refusal of the House member Leadership to accept the American people’s choice for President.

The Only thing that’s weakening is the Democrat Party and those supporting them.
