Joe Lieberman: Founding Fathers would have wanted a Trump acquittal
Washington Examiner ^ | February 1, 2020 | Andrew Mark Miller

Posted on 02/01/2020 4:40:23 PM PST by Kaslin

Former Democratic Connecticut Sen. Joe Lieberman said that he does not believe there was evidence to impeach President Trump and believes he would have voted to acquit if he were still in the Senate.

"The call that President Trump made with President Zelensky of Ukraine was inappropriate, was wrong, it shouldn't have been done," Lieberman said to the Blaze’s Glenn Beck. “But did it reach the point where we can say nine months before an election ... that, if we keep him in office, he represents a danger to the country? I don't think so," he added.

Lieberman did say that he would have voted to call witnesses in the trial.

"I'd probably vote for witnesses," the retired senator said before commenting on how political discourse was more civil back in the “good ol' days” of the Clinton impeachment.

He also added that the voters will have the opportunity to decide Trump’s fate in November and that it would be how the Founding Fathers wanted it. He believes that if the framers saw Trump’s acquittal, they would respond, “This is what we intended.”

Lieberman voted "not guilty" on both articles of impeachment against President Bill Clinton during his Senate impeachment trial in 1999.

Lieberman, who was at one time referred to as the "conscience of the Senate," criticized 2020 Democrats earlier this month for not supporting Trump's strike against Iranian Gen. Qassem Soleimani.

“In their uniformly skeptical or negative reactions to Soleimani’s death, Democrats are falling well below Vandenberg’s standard and, I fear, creating the risk that the U.S. will be seen as acting and speaking with less authority abroad at this important time,” he said.

I didn’t always agree with Lieberman but at least he was an adult.

The Democrat party could use a lot more like him nowadays.

Thanks for speaking up senator Lieberman. But there was nothing wrong with the phone call. And had he asked for help with the Ukrainian aspects of the Bidens criminal investigation “quid pro quo” it would have consistent with his authority to conduct foreign relations and our ukraine treaty — indeed the D’s could’ve impeached him for not faithfully executing the laws of the United States etc

Reportedly John McCain really wanted to make Lieberman his running mate in 2008.

The whole impeachment hoax is ridiculous. The phone call was perfectly fine. Trump obviously had seen the video of Biden bragging about getting the prosecutor fired, which seems a prima facie case of corruption on Biden's part. Trump probably mentioned it because of free association since he was concerned with whether Zelensky would be serious about combating corruption in Ukraine. He may not even have been thinking of Biden as a potential opponent in 2020 when he made the comment.

The Democrats who keep complaining that Trump delayed aid to Ukraine voted against the aid--total hypocrites but no chance they will be called on it by the media.

You can add to your reasoning my thought that Trump was advising the newly elected president to remember to DO what he RAN ON. Trump has unfailingly fought to fulfill his promises. Promises made, Promises kept. Every politician should adhere to their promises. Few Do.

Until he specifically apologizes for his treason, I will never forgive Joe for his action/inaction during the 2000 Florida recount fiasco. He was there when Democrat lawyers were disqualifying the absentee ballots of deployed military voters due to the lack of dated postal stamps. During that time, we could send mail from combat zones by simply writing “free” where the postage went, so there was no stamp to cancel.

Disenfranchising military voters exercising their franchise from a combat zone is as low as it gets. Joe is a traitor, and I wouldn’t piss on him if he were on fire.

Trump sure tries to honor his promises. Sometimes he wins. But it’s often by executive action which sometimes can be reversed by next president. Why this approach? Because of the commie rats in the House of Reps. Who prefer to harass pdjt over doing their jobs as our “ representatives”. Given the toxicity ( and utter insanity) in the House , I think pdjt is doing an exceptionally good job

Totally agree. Remember that the Emancipation Proclamation was an Executive Order. There’s always hope that Trump’s EO’s will stick.

Glad he is speaking.. REASON to the obvious lunacy of his fellow jews— ultra lefties Schumer and Nadless, the round presence (whom Schiff ignored, notably in their attention seeking combat narcissism).

"The call that President Trump made with President Zelensky of Ukraine was inappropriate, was wrong, it shouldn't have been done..."

Bull hockey.

Trump didn't just pick up the phone and call the Ukraine President.

There were thirty people on that call. Lawyers had vetted every word Trump was going to say.

Biteme is on video confessing to demanding an illegal quid pro quo from Ukraine.

https://youtu.be/Q0_AqpdwqK4?t=3074

We have a treaty with Ukraine calling for mutual assistance in corruption investigations, like the corruption Biteme confessed to.

https://www.bizpacreview.com/2019/09/28/watters-presents-bill-clinton-signed-treaty-allowing-trump-to-request-assistance-from-ukraine-on-biden-831563

Trump is the chief law enforcement officer of the USA, and he was performing his duty to enforce the law.

Nowadays, the nuts in that party make FDR look like a Conservative.

Nowadays, they make Obama, Tsongus, and Dukakis look like conservatives.

That should be the question every reporter should ask of every demorat who calls Trumps phone call a crime. Seems none want to bring that question into the mix. Almost makes you wonder if the media is as corrupt as the Demorats.

It’s always easier to see shades when you are lucky enough to be born.

“Sen. Joseph I. Lieberman is a staunch supporter of abortion rights now, and even voted against a ban on partial-birth abortion...”

>> I call b.s. Lieberman would've toed the demonicRAT line. <<

I agree. It's easy to say you would vote to acquit if you're no longer in the Senate.

If LIEberman were still there, he'd give some mumbo-jumbo excuse about how he "personally" feels that Trump's actions do not merit removal, but the evidence that a crime was committed are "overwhelming" and HAS to put aside his PERSONAL feelings and follow the wishes of his constituents to remove Trump and is therefore voting Gulity and blah blah blah...

Basically he'd crap his pants after the RATS promised to purge him in the next primary if he doesn't do the party's bidding on this one.

Weicker, if he was in the Senate wouldn’t have run (to destroy Connecticut) as the A(nti) Connecticut Party. I voted for Joe against Wackjob, because he (Weicker) makes Romney look conservative. Weicker, I couldn’t stand during the Watergate hearings.

They already purged him in the primary, he won in 2006 as an Indie, remember?

After backing McCain he was dead as rat, so if he had run again in 2012 he’d be depending on GOP pulling an Angus King in reverse and not strongly opposing him so he could win with most of the GOP votes.

He’d probably have no choice but to be a defacto RINO at this point if he were to have won again in 2018.

His future as a rat ended in 2008, if he had backed Obama he could have pulled a Lisa Murkowski and won the rat primary for another term despite losing and going outside the party to win again.

You know I’m not a fan but I really have no reason to doubt his word here

I would only suggest that Senate, Democrap Senators vote to acquit the impeachment of POTUS, Donald J. Trump...period. If they do not do so, many will go down to defeat come the November general election.

Democraps, Pelosi & Schumer would have you believe it is the Republicans who are in trouble with voters. Nope...it is the other way around!!!
