No, the 2019-nCoV [coronavirus] genome doesn’t really seem engineered from HIV
The Prepared ^ | 1/31/2020 | Ari Allyn-Feuer

Posted on 01/31/2020 8:50:37 PM PST by catnipman

They found that all four of these spike protein inserts appear as matches to at least one sequence in at least one variant of the HIV virus. The sequences come from the gp120 and Gag proteins in HIV, the former of which is also a viral envelope recognition protein. This has led many to credulously assume that this is evidence, or even a strong indication, that 2019-nCoV was engineered from its bat ancestor by humans inserting HIV sequences.

But they’re wrong; it’s still not engineered. An analysis of the paper clearly reveals that:

1. There is nothing remarkable about the fact that 2019-nCoV’s sequence diverges from its nearest known relative, or that its unique sequences are conserved among cases of 2019-nCoV.

2. The sequence matches with HIV are very short and appear in hypervariable regions of both virus, and similar overlaps are seen between 2019-nCoV sequences and many other organisms.

3. The unique biological properties that HIV sequences could theoretically impart to another virus are completely missing from 2019-nCoV, and 2019-nCoV has no unique clinical properties that are outside what is known to be possible for a coronavirus.

In other words, the sequence overlap is not actually uncanny, and there is no big scoop here. The group in India fell prey to some of the pitfalls of bioinformatics research.

The 2019-nCoV genome does not contain remarkable genomic properties which need explaining, and for which we’d look to some kind of bioengineering as a cause.

2019-nCoV continues to give every appearance of being a wild coronavirus that jumped from bats to humans by way of an animal intermediary in the Huanan seafood market in Wuhan in late 2019.

Author’s note: I have a Ph.D. in bioinformatics, and am a principal data scientist at a major pharmaceutical company. This paper isn’t directly in my wheelhouse, but it’s pretty close.

So the author doesn't really know if it is or isn't. I cannot take his opinion as gospel, yet at any rate. We shall wait and see what transpires on this issue.

Issue still open, as far as I can see. But I am no expert by and shape or form. Which is why I remain open to more experts on the issue.

Don’t get me wrong, its not that I think the worst-case scenarios are true, only that the real truth lies someplace between what the Chi-comms are telling us and the worst-case scenarios.

Communists lie, that’s what they do, just like their kissing cousins the Progressives in our country.

Just think Schiff on steroids.

“The unique biological properties that HIV sequences could theoretically impart to another virus are completely missing from 2019-nCoV...”

I hope that is true. Even natural HIV sequences might cause real problems, but from this sentence it seems like the HIV parts that could cause trouble aren’t here?

I do agree with that.

Soviet Russia was the same way.

Each of these Communist or even totalitarian governments have things to hide.

I think of Tiananmen Square. I know what this government is capable of. I wouldn’t be surprised by any story that would come out of there.

On the other hand, I’ve seen human nature at work too. Sometimes the public can be very un-reasoned.

Any of us who have had to deal with customers, or have watched how customers behave, understand that.

I live in a city of roughly 200,000 people. If we had a big epidemic come though, our hospitals would not be able to handle 25% of our populace contracting a disease.

A thinking person would realize there’s only so much a local or even national government can do in a situation like that, especially if the surrounding communities were also under the gun.

If it was a nationwide situation, it would be terrible.

None the less, you’d have people out there very angry because the government wasn’t handling it.

There’s only so much governments can do in the worst of situations.

I think part of this is the Chinese government’s fault, but I do thing the public can have unrealistic expectations too.

It’s just a real mess.

It sounds as if I’m trying to cover for the Chinese government here. I’m not really. I just try to think hour our nation wold handle this if all of a sudden in a few weeks, there were 20-30 thousand people needing hospitalization.

I know my community members would be enraged. I live in a community where a certain part of the populace is just very difficult to deal with. Good luck in an emergency.

“but from this sentence it seems like the HIV parts that could cause trouble aren’t here?”

that’s the way i read it: very small snippets of RNA in the coronavirus match very small snippets in HIV, but it’s just more or less a coincidence because these corona virus snippets match other pieces of other viruses as well, and the author also goes on to later say that the coronavirus has no ability to infect T-cells, which is the hallmark of the HIV virus, and which is the action that makes HIV so deadly because T-cells are the body’s defense against foreign invaders like HIV ...

honestly, it doesn’t surprise me. The first treatment was Tamiflu (oseltamivir) according to the (first or second?) Lancet paper. This was a doctor, so no doubt he offered to be a guinea pig, throw the kitchen sink at it, and see if HIV-antivirals (ritonavir and lopinavir) would be a more effective, damn the side effects. If he was starting to slide, what did he have to lose?

Yep. The entire system is based on a “typical” day pretty much. Through in an earthquake, a hurricane or a pandemic and things can get rough for quite a long time.

Who even asks these silly questions that experts seem compelled to answer?

The Wuhan Coronavirus came out of the sewers of Wuhan.

It didn’t have to be engineered by man.

Nature did it. And any/every Chinese wet market is the perfect environment for more of the same.

And they’ll keep coming.

Um, that would be because a lot of HIV drugs are useful against RNA viruses. HIV and the Wuhan flu are both RNA viruses.

Or, put another way, you are basically saying that because atropine is used as an antidote to nerve agents, giving atropine to a patient to treat amblyopia (”lazy eye”) or bradycardia (”slow heart”) means that they have also been exposed to a nerve agent.

Medications are often used to treat more than one disease, if you didn’t know.

Idiots, mostly. Sadly, we seem to have no few of them here on FR.

If you get one fact wrong all the others are placed in doubt whether true or false.

“Huanan seafood market in Wuhan”

It is not a ‘seafood’ market but rather a common inexpensive Chinese market called a ‘wet’ market weer all manner of foods may be found and eaten.

Note about the author (Ari Allyn-Feuer) from the article:
“Author’s note: I have a Ph.D. in bioinformatics, and am a principal data scientist at a major pharmaceutical company. ***This paper isn’t directly in my wheelhouse, but it’s pretty close***.”

In other words, he has no idea what he is talking about if the virus is a bi-weapon - information he would not be party to or have knowledge of.

Any bio-weapons worker would be under heavy secrecy like any other person involved in SAPs and could ******never reveal****** what he knows or does not know.

Further this guy has no NO access to any Chinese bio-weapons research facility, so he has no idea what the Chinese have done or not done. He is speculating with a little bit of knowledge.

Use salt liberally
