U.S. life expectancy has improved for the first time in four years, thanks to a sharp decline in the cancer death rate and to a drop in fatal drug overdoses. The new increase is small, but marks at least a temporary halt to the trend. (Jan. 30)

Drug deaths shouldn’t be counted in the life expectancy rate. It’s a category of its own. Neither should accidental deaths.
Exactly. If you use illegal drugs you must expect your life to be shortened.
Affecting the averages: Clinton’s are slowing down.
Only 11 years to go.
We’re not suiciding ourselves anymore because Obama’s in office.
Can’t be....millions are dying from climate change.
The recent cancer breakthrough from researchers at Cardiff, Wales, will truly revolutionize cancer treatment for many types of tumors untreatable today. Lets pray it wont take 10 years before it sees the light of day in the USA.
I hope I live that long!
It’s the end of the world as we know it
Trump’s fault. More people will live longer to draw more social security payments, therefore hastening the collapse of the social security trust fund. We really need a lower life expectancy so more people will die before collecting social security. Trump must be stopped!
(Unfortunately sarcasm is not always obvious)
Druggies already killed themselves?
I am convinced that prosperity is the killer
The number of severely obese people is quite large and is a function of prosperity. Obesity will save Social Security and medicare as people die off early
Actually, I live in a wealthy community ( on the poor side of town.). The really rich folk are not obese at all.
I was a large guy in a senior role in two large companies. Onei. telecom. Another in banking. The higher I rose in the company, the more comments I heard on my waistline. And I am not what most people would call obeseI was built like a 40 year old stevedore or linebacker.
In the city I see young people who are just grossly obese. Its a nutrition thing, not an abundance thing.
If a cancer miracle cure comes to market, it will be throttled back until a steady shift in research can move to neurological degenerative diseases can take place. Stuff like Parkinson's, ALS, dementia, etc...
Cancer research is a giant institution. That's always been one of the paradoxical outcomes of any disease that supports trillions of dollars in spending. Success = Problem.
More Narcan has reduced ODs
Well, I would argue that abundance is in fact prosperity.
My parents and grand parents and the folks on old movies experienced the depression and war. They tend to be thin.
I understand your point though.
When you are first hired in banking management, your mentor is usually preparing for the curb. It's like a life cycle. And yes, don't get fat, bald, or other ways unattractive. For that sin it's the curb immediately without the parachute.
This is a hugely significant piece of news and yet it gets 50 words from AP.
The US suffered 3 consecutive years of life decline. Hasnt happened in 100 years.
Trump reversed this by disabling Obamacare and attacking opioid crisis at the border and within the US.
