A Chinese People’s Liberation Army lieutenant spied on the United States while doing “research” on a J-1 visa at a Massachusetts University.
Yanqing Ye, a PLA officer with ties to the Chinese Communist Party, was one of three individuals indicted with aiding China and hiding connections.
Others caught in the indictment include Dr. Charles Lieber, chairman of the Department of Chemistry and Chemical Biology at Harvard University, and Chinese national Zaosong Zheng.
The three indictments -which may or may not be related- are reported to be part of China’s ongoing mission to siphon off of US technological achievements and scientific research.
According to Mass Live, Ye’s handler was a colonel in the PLA and professor at the National University of Defense Technology, a major military academy in China.
When Ye signed her visa documentation, she lied about being discharged from the military.
“Ye falsely identified herself as a ‘student’ and lied about her ongoing military service at the National University of Defense Technology (NUDT), a top military academy directed by the CCP,” the US Attorney’s Office said.
The lieutenant managed to avoid scrutiny as she “studied” in the United States from October 2017 to April 2019, but was eventually caught while at the airport, where she admitted to FBI agents that she was a lieutenant in the PLA and was a member of the CCP.
“Ye acted as an agent for the Chinese government, yet she never notified the Attorney General as required for agents working for a foreign government,” federal records state.
One of Ye’s missions was to research an American professor who focused on computer security, digital forensics and computer software engineering at the US Naval Postgraduate School in California.

And the Chinese will keep infiltrating our universities and research facilities because there is no harsh penalty for being caught. For every spy sent home, two more spies come and do research paid for by US grant money. Let the Chinese be educated at their own facilities and stop giving them visas.

I had multiple dinner with a guy and his wife in the 90s at my college who was rather high up in the Chinese Army.
I figured it must be okay if he got in. He was one of a relatively few Chinese admitted to that school, at that time.

The universities are complicit in this; they charge far more for a foreign student than they can get out of an American. This isn’t even new; it was already happening decades ago when I was in college.

We can put a stop to this by only allowing education visas for Chinese beginning a program of study up to age 20.... Or we could sabotage them by allowing them to study only “social sciences” and “studies” courses.

Our universities are crawling with Chinese military plants in their 300,000+ students enrolled in US, but the administrators love it because the Chinese pay full price for the fake “students.” No problem for the Chi-Coms to pay the bill. They just recycle our dollars from their Walmart and Apple sales.
If it wasn’t for Chinese (or Indian) grad students in university science/engineering programs, there would be
no grad students.
