A Rice County Catholic priest apologized Wednesday for describing Islam as the greatest threat in the world, both to the United States and Christianity itself, in a recent sermon.
My homily on immigration contained words that were hurtful to Muslims, the Rev. Nick VanDenBroeke said in a statement posted on the website of the Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis. Im sorry for this. I realize now that my comments were not fully reflective of the Catholic Churchs teaching on Islam.
Earlier Wednesday, a Muslim organization called on Minnesota Catholic leaders to repudiate the sermon.
VanDenBroeke, pastor of the 100-year-old Church of the Immaculate Conception in Lonsdale, made the remark during a 15-minute homily on Jan. 5, declared Immigration Sunday by Minnesotas Catholic bishops. In the sermon, he talked about how he believed parishioners should address their concerns about immigration.
After City Pages published an article about the sermon Wednesday, the Minnesota chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-Minnesota) issued a statement condemning VanDenBroekes remarks and seeking a response from the Minnesota Catholic Conference, the public policy voice of the states six dioceses.

He was right and should not have apologized.
“I realize now that my comments were not fully reflective of the Catholic Churchs (current) teaching on Islam.

Popes of yore led armies against Islam.
The ImPopester is leading his flock to the slaughter.
Surprised they didn’t force him to convert to Islam or DIE!!!
Jesus said words hurtful to false teachers and He didn't apologize.
So I guess the current teaching of the Catholic Church is more important than the truth? Not in my book.
Death to America, the Infidels...
I’m not sure how you spin that to make the priest wrong.
He didn’t say this, but it is on the record pure and simple.
Seems to me the pretend religion is fair game.
When they stop stoning women who have been raped, get back to me.
Whose members were bill killed by the thousands in Northern Iraq by ISIS? Islamic adherents, or Christians? And who were the member of ISIS, Islamic or Christian?
Case closed...
You are right. I wish he were my priest.
I realize now that my comments were not fully reflective of the Catholic Churchs teaching on Islam....
Yeah what exactly is not “fully reflective”?
Our belief that Christ was God is pretty much the basis of Christianity.
And yeah there’s lots of religions that don’t believe He was.
But only one group tries to kill us because of it!!
Someone get that priest a Bible sooner rather than later. Make that an opened Bible. But seeing he is from MN that explains it all.
You never apologize for telling the truth. Never.
The greatest threat is spelled out in Psalm 9:17
The wicked shall be turned into hell, and all the nations that forget God
That is the greatest threat. A culture that has no fear of God, and no reverence of God. That culture is just circling around in the toilet, and waiting to plunge down into the sewer of history.
Sure, Islam is inspired of Satan, but I'm not going to blame them for our own faults. A Nation that embraces the celebration of sexual perversions, and that invites Islam onto its shores with open arms - has deeper problems than pointing fingers at Islam.
Current Catholic teaching is to bow our heads to make the beheadings easier for the muslims.
Previous Popes understood the threat of Islam.

As Brandon Rogers notes in the Ignatius Press edition of G. K. Chesterton’s poem “Lepanto”: Pope Pius V “understood the tremendous importance of resisting the aggressive expansion of the Turks better than any of his contemporaries appear to have. He understood that the real battle being fought was spiritual; a clash of creeds was at hand, and the stakes were the very existence of the Christian West.” But then, as now, the unity of Christendom was shattered; and in the aftermath of the Protestant revolt, Islam saw its opportunity.

And what do Muslim imams say about Christians? How many apologies have they made?
I wish he were mine too and I’m not even Catholic
That comes later when they are more numerous.
The priest backed down because his Bishop told him to apologize, most likely because the Bishop had been told from higher up to demand an apology.
This is the ImPopester’s “new Islam friendly” Catholic church.
Chrislam is coming.
Wow.
Man one can ardently disagree with some of the facets of different Christian denominations, but I can’t stand seeing utter vitriol and hatred towards Christian sects BY Christian sects and it’s done by some in all denominations.
Because there’s a group that doesn’t care AT ALL about our differences.
They just care about the one belief we all have in common.
And they want us all dead for that belief.
In Minnesota, the truth is counted as hate. This must be an inherent defect of Scandinavian culture, just look at the parallels with Sweden.
