As China attempts to contain the spread of a new coronavirus that has left more than 100 people dead, rumors and disinformation have spread amid the scramble for answers.
Some of the speculation has centered on a virology institute in Wuhan, the city where the outbreak began. One fringe theory holds that the disaster could be the accidental result of biological weapons research.
But in conversations with The Washington Post, experts rejected the idea that the virus could be man-made.
“Based on the virus genome and properties there is no indication whatsoever that it was an engineered virus,” said Richard Ebright, a professor of chemical biology at Rutgers University.
Tim Trevan, a biological safety expert based in Maryland, said most countries had largely abandoned their bioweapons research after years of work proved fruitless.
“The vast majority of new, nasty diseases ... come from nature,” he said.
The British newspaper Daily Mail was among the first to suggest the possibility of a link between the newly spreading virus and the Wuhan National Biosafety Laboratory, reporting last week that the lab, which opened in 2014 and is part of the Wuhan Institute of Virology, had been the subject of safety concerns in the past.
A separate article published by the Washington Times, a conservative newspaper in Washington, took the theories a step further, suggesting in a headline that the “Coronavirus may have originated in lab linked to China’s biowarfare program” and pointing to the Wuhan Institute of Virology.
The article cited research by Dany Shoham, a former Israeli military intelligence officer, who told The Post he did not want to comment further.

Yep. I was leaning towards the live market species jump theory, because this one was too disturbing, even if plausible. To see the WaPo jump in to discredit it pushes me toward the conspiracy theory and away from the accident and error explanation.

Jeff Besos’ money and power comes from Amazon. Amazon sells how much Chinese merchandise? The Chinese government or its officials control how much Chinese business? Do you think the Bezos-owned Washington Post is going to accurately report anything the Chinese government doesn’t want reported?

The virus genetic sequence from the patient in Washington is nearly identical to the sequences posted from China. The available sequences suggest a likely single, recent emergence from a virus related to bat coronaviruses and the SARS coronavirus.

All, geneticists scanned entire DNA sequence of #coronavirus last week and revealed the virus started to activate on Oct 1, 2019. First random deaths were most likely treated as pneumonia or flu victims. This allowed virus to propagate unchecked throughout Wuhan for 40-50 days.
and it “EXPERTS” so go back to sleep and send Xi a note telling him to lift the quarantine of 55 million people, keep the stock markets open, open the roads, fly those planes all over the world and, by all means, have the People’s Liberation Army troops turn in their L4 hazmat suits and return to their barracks.
If this had been weaponized, the mortality rates would be much higher than these appear to be.
People would contract it and die. We’d be seeing mortality rates closer to 90% than under 3%.
We have five people in the U. S. who have come down with it. So far we’ve had one fatality. (unless something has changed with regard to their situation) That fatality was early on, and I believe the person was very ill upon returning to the U. S.
I believe the portion of folks outside China who have the disease and are still living, pretty much puts to rest the idea this was some sort of biological weapon release.
Anything is possible, but I don’t give this theory much credence at this point.
We still don’t know what ethnicities are being effected.

From the list of twenty or so nations that have one to a few infected people, it’s seems to be a rather indiscriminate agent.

Someone infected in Germany by a coworker does not mean he is nonasian.
Same is true of people who were there, came back, and got sick.
This is highly contagious. But we aren’t hearing of planeloads of people coming down with it.
