[Has anyone conjectured that the acknowledged rapid spread, but most seemingly most dangerous for the 40+ age groups would cull older, less productive people...also those holding what are now considered obsolete values or behaviors?

Leave the young pliable breeders in place while justifying near absolute control of a populace?
A viral Logan’s Run?]

Unlikely. If discovered, it would be catastrophic for Party aristocrats. In China, ~1/3 of the last 2200 years has been ruled by dynasties established by peasant rebels. That’s as if variants of Spartacus’s progeny had ruled Rome for 500 years, which never happened.

And then there’s the never-ending struggle for power among China’s elites. What better pretext for stringing Xi Jinping up from the nearest lamp post than the deliberate release of this pathogen? Not out of any particular empathy for the dead victims but because Xi’s demise would create a lot of job openings below him, as his closest associates down the ladder are gotten rid of by his rivals.

Chinese history is replete with both types of revolutions/mutinies. Xi would be nuts to tempt fate with such an off the wall idea.

China’s rulers aren’t queen ants presiding over ant colonies completely subservient to them by instinct. They have always been constrained by potential mutiny by powerful members (in their own right) of the imperial clan, influential courtiers, wealthy members of the gentry/aristocracy and military commanders appointed as self-sufficient viceroys to fend off significant foreign or domestic threats. The handful of examples of elite mutiny here are just the tip of the iceberg.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zhao_Gao
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cao_Cao
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/An_Lushan

There are literally hundreds of similar, less prominent ones.

In living memory, the most prominent examples of elite competition include the following:

A regional military commander’s defiance of a kill order for Deng Xiaoping. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ye_Jianying

A prominent military commander’s coup attempt:

A successful coup by Deng Xiaoping against Mao Zedong’s designated chairman-for-life successor:

RE: Wondered when the tinfoil hats would be issued....

Stores ran out of tinfoil hats just after they ran out of face masks.

Not a sign that cool heads will prevail.

I added to it by referencing the 2018-2019 refusal by China to allow the world to get samples to develop vaccines for “a deadly new virus”. I wondered if anyone knew if this was new or connected to that story. It does say old one was a deadly new bird flu variant, probably not the rat and bat eaters’ new one.

For China to refuse that cooperation means either they do not care if millions suffer and die in other countries without a vaccine, or they are developing biowarfare capabilities with that virus.

I hope that doesn’t mean I need the tinfoil hat. Just a question.

>>Interesting. 41 deaths so far.

If China says 41, that probably means 10x or 100x that at least.

Interesting that the virus is not being reported at all in places like North Korea, Russia, Syria, Iran and Eastern bloc countries.

By not acting against the dwarf running the illegal Pyongyang regime, China’s dictatorship won’t get flowers from me when it dies, but IMHO it will be replaced by something darker and uglier. OTOH, how will be be able to tell the difference? Oh, no! They’re mistreating the muzzies?!? So’s Burma?!? What did muzzies ever do to anyone?!? /s

Don’t get me wrong... I despise the chicoms because of personal experience in the 1950’s...

It would tickle me pink if a pandemic, confined to china, substantially reduced the population of those who, inevitably someday (IMHO), will be in a ground war once more with the U.S.

I expect the Chinese diaspora and trade links are thin on the ground in those countries.

Or did someone catch a "cold" at work?

I’m not a big fan of “...may have...” or “...could have...” articles.

We all have our reasons to be suspect of China’s leadership, but we don’t need to jump to conclusions.

In addition, I will say, if this were a weaponized illness, we’d be hearing about hundreds of thousands of people dead already > IMO.

You can only keep so much a secret.

I will also say, that if this was a weaponized agent, and it goes public, look out. All bets are off.

The Chinese people might surprise us.

Thank you for your service. The Chinese intervention was a Pearl Harbor-style sneak attack that did not evoke a similar response. I expect the disparity comes down to the fact that, unlike the Japanese, they did not attack US territory.

WOW

That’s scary.

Don’t think something that vicious was meant to use now but could certainly have been created for the future.
