Shanghai Disneyland will close its doors Saturday as a reaction to the spread of a form of coronavirus that has now killed 26 people in mainland China.

The resort complex, which normally operates 365 days per year and welcomes more than 10 million visitors annually, announced Friday afternoon local time that it will shutter the Shanghai Disneyland theme park, the Disneytown retail and dining area, the Walt Disney Grand Theatre, and Wishing Star Park. It did not give a date for their reopening.

Trying to keep up with the news on this new virus, but China is apparently keeping a lid on it...

China has also just shut all of its 70,000 movie theaters.

Nothing serious, though; nothing to see here, just move on...

I shudder to think about the menu at Shanghai Disney. Sure you can get Peking Donald Duck, but then the kids get fried Mickey and Minnie and your wife splurges on the Pluto platter.

Can the virus travel on goods that China is shipping to the USA?

At some point, very shortly, a food shortage will start up, and massive riots will be the outcome.

I have the same question. Every store has their products.

This is bizarre because I saw that movie “Contagion” last week and the same thing happens in that movie, virus starts in China.

The virus spreads like the common cold (to which it is related). It doesn’t last long on inanimate objects.

But it spreads rapidly from person to person, especially in crowds (or, among passengers on airplanes).

This is what China fears the most. Complete shut down of commerce. It would be devastating.we are entering uncharted waters if this thing continues to spread. Trump could soon shut down all travel to and from China. Next would be an embargo on their products. Tinfoil hat stuff? Maybe...

Yes, but...

Dry goods, AFAIK, can have contaminated surfaces when they leave the factory. That's the bad news. The good news is taht the virus can only survive about 48 hours under such circumstances, and by the time all the warehousing, trans pacific shipping and local distribution is done any corona virus would be long dead.

Perishable good, food, flowers, etc.? Express delivery and more clement environments, refrigeration, humid conditions, etc. I think the virus just might survive and still be infectious when it gets to the store shelves.

Thank God and Congress we have COOL (Country Of Origin Labeling) on foodstuffs. oh wait...

If I remember my microbiology, some bacteria form spores, which can survive for long periods in adverse conditions. However, not only do viruses not survive long at all outside of hosts, but they do not form spores.

This bug really needs proximity and close contact. You’re not going to get it on a product that shipped from China.

(2010) Old article on Corona viruses in general:

If deposited on surfaces in these types of secretions, coronaviruses could potentially survive on surfaces in health care environments for days.

Well that is worth taking note. So much foe the Chinese New Year celebrations. Must be very bad if Disney has to shut down.

Yeah. Probably too late, but some props to the Chicom government for at least trying to get ahead of it.
