Mitch McConnell is the master of the Senate

Every hostile nickname that Mitch McConnell gets is further confirmation of his effectiveness.

The latest is “Midnight Mitch,” a reaction to his resolution setting out the road map for the Senate impeachment trial. The measure stipulated that House impeachment managers could make their case over two days of 12-hour sessions, possibly pushing the presentations into the wee hours. Hence, the latest alliterative moniker for McConnell, also known to his enemies as “Moscow Mitch.”

McConnell relented slightly on the resolution, giving the managers – and the president’s team – three days, instead of two, for opening arguments. But he still got his way on the broader question of how to run the trial – unsurprisingly, because McConnell is a master at what he does.

When all is said and done, he’ll be remembered as one of the most effective Senate majority leaders in the modern era. A portion of an early Democratic presidential debate was devoted to asking candidates how they’d get around McConnell as president – and none of them had a good answer. He now looms as a hate figure for the left at the same time he’s won the grudging admiration of conservatives who once scorned him as too establishmentarian.

Mitch's MO is simple: He will not force GOP Senators into votes that could harm them politically if the vote will be lost anyway. That ticks off some conservatives who want Mitch to "get the RINO's on the record" but he doesn't believe in symbolic defeats. That earns him some loyalty from those same RINO's so on close votes where they are waffling, he can bring the pressure to get the vote total over the top.

But when Mitch has the votes, he is utterly ruthless and will push his advantage as hard as he can.

He has been remarkably effective overall.

Not from me. I believe, as a member of the gang of eight, he was fully aware of what the fbi/doj were up to in the 2016 election. Not only did he allow that to go on, he fully supported the follow-up mueler investigation. Add the fact that since this "Impeachment Inquiry" has been going on, the senate has not had a single hearing in curiosity about the non-stop accusations that Trump is some kind of anti-American nazi. F* mitch and the sleazy senators he rode in on.

Ever since Cocaine Mitch destroyed the Rats re: the Kavanaugh confirmation, I have had a new-found respect for him. But I ultimately have to thank President Trump for showing otherwise spineless Republicans how to find their courage. POTUS is the ultimate Profile in Courage, and he leads by example. Trump helped Yertle the Turtle find his courage.

I loved it when POTUS turned Kavanaugh’s swearing-in into a raucous pep rally, and I could tell Mitch was surprised and pleased to get a long loud standing ovation. He liked being Cocaine Mitch, the studly Majority Leader, LOL!
