Chief Justice Roberts admonishes both sides at Senate impeachment trial, after marathon session erupts into shouting match
Fox News ^ | January 21 2020 | Gregg Re

A marathon first day in the Senate impeachment trial against President Trump erupted into a shouting match well after midnight early Wednesday morning, as Trump's legal team unloaded on Democratic impeachment manager Rep. Jerry Nadler, D-N.Y. -- in an exchange that prompted a bleary-eyed Chief Justice John Roberts to sternly admonish both sides for misconduct in the chamber.

Nadler began the historic spat by speaking in support of the eighth amendment of the day proposed by Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, after each of Schumer's previous attempted alterations to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell's rules were rejected by a united Republican contingent by a vote of 53-47. The eighth amendment, issued as the clock struck midnight, was to issue a subpoena for former National Security Advisor John Bolton, who has reportedly described Trump's conduct as akin to a "drug deal."

Nader, who was overheard apparently planning to impeach Trump back in 2018, said it would be a "treacherous vote" and a "cover-up" for Republicans to reject the Bolton subpoena, claiming that "only guilty people try to hide evidence."

Politically, the President is far better off forcing the dems into the corner to which they are quickly being shoved.

It’s put up or shut up time.

The threat of an actual trial is hanging over their alcohol pickled heads. That means pretrial discovery. Witness depositions, aka perjury traps and subpoenas for documents flying.

Far better to drag everything out into the open.

To paraphrase ScatFranNan, sunlight is the best disinfectant.

They’re just stupid enough to think they can tangle with Trump, Sekulow, and Dershowitz, and live to tell about it.

I don’t trust Roberts either, but, he may not be all that important here.

Nobody with a third of a working brain steps in front of the Trump Train.

Well, if you’re gonna get some funds together to send Monster and Red Bull, could you redirect a case or two my way? :)

Nadler thinks he is influencing GOP Senators. I suspect he is but not in the way he would like. Those guys are gonna start resenting being held hostage 12 hours a day on milk and candy and no Bourbon. Our politicians can’t function without Bourbon.

Think about this. Every night for the next month America will be looking for the evening TV enjoyment. All they are going to get is Shampeachment 24/7 wall to wall. As the days go by I expect public support for shampeachment to plummet quickly. Say goodbye to Wisconsin, Michigan, and PA you Rats. You really screwed yourselves.

Can you imagine being on trial, and after both sides rest, the jury tells the judge, “We don’t have enough information to convict, we’d like to call a few more witnesses.”

I fully agree. Failing to prosecute the real criminals emboldens them to the degree that they are even able to concoct sham issue like this witch hunt trial and kangaroo court. Hillary SHOULD have been prosecuted for her numerous blatant offenses, whether it was mishandling CLASSIFIED government documents to her shady deals and convenient “suicides” surrounding her and Bill.

“Roberts can just keep his Obamacare-mouth shut as far as I’m concerned.”

Roberts legally defined Obamacare as a tax, and by labeling it as a tax made Obamacare perfectly legal. The adverse reaction by the Democrats was they in no shape, way, or form wanted it known pubilically that Obamacare was essentially a tax and therefore another bucket of money that they could used as non discretionary funding for all sorts of garbage.

I read the linked article and shouts were not mentioned.

That said, there is no doubt that the President’s defense team had to be so incensed at Nadler’s accusations that they reacted with the strong statements that they used.

IMHO, Justice Roberts was totally “out of order” to make his comments! Sick.

Judas Roberts only spoke up because Trump's legal team was scoring massive points against Nadler and the Democrats.

____________________________________________________________________________

"'Only guilty people try to hide evidence?'" Sekulow asked, quoting Nadler incredulously. "So, I guess when President Obama instructed his attorney general to not give information, he was guilty of a crime? That's the way it works, Mr. Nadler? Is that the way you view the United States Constitution? Because that's not the way it was written, that is not the way it's interpreted, and that's not the way the American people should have to live."

The outbursts prompted Roberts, who as Chief Justice of the United States is constitutionally required to serve as the presiding judge in the impeachment trial, to issue a highly unusual rebuke to both sides of the debate.

"It is appropriate at this point for me to admonish both the House managers and the president's counsel in equal terms to remember that they are addressing the world's greatest deliberative body," Roberts said. "I do think those addressing the Senate should remember where they are." — Chief Justice John Roberts, after midnight

I know where they are - on stinking Capital Hill, where the Democrats shred the Constitution each and every day. Who do these fools think they are fooling? They are not on the Temple Mount, and we don't respect them.

And Roberts - clean your own house! Ruth Buzzie made horrible statements about President Trump, both before and after his election - and yet she is NEVER called to recuse herself.

What a joke.

According to some sources, Barr is going to come swinging in on a vine in a superhero costume any minute now to save the day. I think John Williams music may be playing in the background.

Certainly in 4 to 6 weeks. For sure. But it could take as long as FOur to Six Months. Surely no longer.

He has been blackmailed and paid off, and everyone in D.C. knows it.

Roberts can just keep his Obamacare-mouth shut as far as I’m concerned.

Maybe he will simply rule that anything Trump's lawyers say is a "tax", and must be highly regulated?

“It’s glorious to see Nadler being taken down by Trump’s lawyers. The Republic in all its glory.”

You’ve got the right perspective here. Nancy celebrates impeachment as a bad mark on the Trump Presidency. The official government record for all time is being created right now in the US Senate by Trump’s legal team - unchangeable public statements about the mens rea, corrupt acts, of the demokrap cabal, especially nadler, schiff, schumer. All white livered men with no shame and no integrity.

Does Chief Justice Roberts have the legal standing to dismiss an impeachment case?

Constitutionally, he only has the power to "preside" over the Senate trial. So, no.

Now if Obama were on trial? Well...….who knows.
