Union’s crime rate in 2010 was about half that of nearby communities like Elizabeth, Irvington and Newark. The average property tax bill in 2011 was about $7,600, several thousand less than neighboring towns like Westfield, Summit and Scotch Plains.

So, not as horrible as nearby towns.

It would be interesting to see the amount of aid going to this town now as compared to fifty years ago.

I was taught by my Dad that America is “The Melting Pot”.

I applaud those who come here legally because they love our Constitution and American culture.

I find it disheartening to read in this article that the Filipino members of this community raised money to send back to the Philippines.

They couldn’t help out their fellow Americans?

The article is misdirection. Even though economic and social norms are important they pale in comparison to the cultural difference between Muslim and Christians. With population growth tending to be mainly in Muslim dominated countries. With Christians having smaller families a natural vacuum is created.

In reality it is far less culturally impacting that much of the population shift in the United States is coming from non Muslim countries.

Obviously, there have been a large number of real estate transactions in Union City and each of those had a buyer and seller or a lessor and lessee.

Each party has been a willing participant in these real estate transactions.

The economics is blind to demographics.

America is game of survival. Newcomers need skills to find a job AND place to raise family. Selection of a safe place for a relatively long time is key, because housing is still big saving vehicle for working people. You got to know your surrounding and how likely it changes over time

I’m Asian. Let me give you some wisdom: the quality of life in a community( division, township or city, state or country) IS the quality of people . Don’t forget that

I grew up near Union. Had an adolescent fantasy about changing the "U" to an "O" on the huge watersphere in town. The family often took the GSP North to shop at the Two Guys store. They still had blue laws, so on Sunday only the food store part was open. Two Guys had a good arcade next to the restaurant. I still have a box of Christmas ornaments with a Two Guys price label on it.

Union was mostly blue collar and had the best bakery in the area. My mom would get birthday cakes there. Great high school football team.

My last intentional trip to Union was with my pseudo-girlfriend to a uniform shop. She was finishing up her nursing school, about 1982 or 81.

The chance of becoming a victim of either violent or property crime in Union City is 1 in 50. Based on FBI crime data, Union City is not one of the safest communities in America. Relative to New Jersey, Union City has a crime rate that is higher than 80% of the state’s cities and towns of all sizes.

It’s changed before. It won’t ever again now.
