The backstory is POTUS is being blamed by Democrats and Fake News for creating the chaos that caused the shoot down. Or something like that. Iran weighed all the options and decided given that Democrats and the EU hate POTUS there is no reason to hide the truth.

What kind of government even allows a commercial airplane to depart hours after launching missiles knowing a very high probability retaliation airstrikes were going to occur.
Undoubtedly, US aircraft were in the area waiting for permission to fire which of course never came. But the Iranians did not know that. If US airstrike had occured . . . who would have taken the blame?

As much as I loathe the government of Iran, I accept that when military tensions are high, there is always the possibility for human error.
At least they’re now admitting the obvious. Can’t deny, that’s a step in the right direction.
