NY Times columnist Paul Krugman says hacker 'compromised' his IP address to 'download child pornography'

New York Times columnist Paul Krugman is appearing to be having technical difficulties as he acknowledged Wednesday on Twitter that his IP address had been "compromised" and used to "download child pornography."

"Well, I’m on the phone with my computer security service, and as I understand it someone compromised my IP address and is using it to download child pornography," Krugman wrote in the tweet. "I might just be a random target. But this could be an attempt to Qanon me. It’s an ugly world out there."

Qanon is a reference to the group of conspiracy theorists who in recent years spread incriminating myths against many high-profile Democrats on social media.

Oh... thanks. I was wondering because we see so much Jared Kushner hate here. Never heard of this other Jared until now.

I worry about this issue myself.

My apartment house has its own computer network, which is available to everyone and works fine.

However, many of the residents here are H-1B software engineers.

If the Police ever show up at my door and accuse me of downloading porn, or committing financial fraud, or transmitting classified information with my computer, I would have NO idea how to defend myself.

Nobody compromised his PC; the pedos are starting to get worried.

...well, some of them are...

In practice, no, but it would not make a difference. Your ISP has logs which detail what IP you were assigned, when you used it, and where you went. You can cover that up a bit with a VPN and/or Tor, but they will still know that you were using those services, and they can be compromised as well. It takes a pretty savvy person to stay anonymous on the internet.

It is not unheard of for hackers to crack someone’s WiFi router. It can be very easy to do depending on how the wifi router is setup.

If someone did access illegal websites or download contraband while they were connected to Krugman’s wifi router, it would appear as if the illegal activity was coming from Krugman’s house. But the downloaded contraband would not be on Krugman’s devices.

Also, (less likely) if his home computer was hacked, a bad actor may be able to ‘remote control’ Krugman’s computer to relay contraband from Krugman’s computer to the hacker’s computer. In this case, the contraband may or may not be on Krugman’s devices depending on how the relay was setup.

But why would Krugman make a twitter post about it before he was cleared? That part doesn’t make any sense.

And how many years ago did these hackers begin their operation (according to the logs,) Mr. Krugman?

Big deal.

I’ve been named “in a court” with “Angela Germany” and may become “A Person of Interest” if I don’t return their calls...

Hey Paul, what's going to happen to the stock market now that Trump won?

“If the question is when markets will recover, a first-pass answer is never.”

I hope he pulled his entire portfolio and left it in cash after he said that......

Given his long history of distorting and outright lying, he hasn’t earned the benefit of the doubt.

“Aren’t IP address assigned randomly each time you log on?”

If the address is dynamic, there will be a lease period and this period could range from a few days to a period of time much longer. Or it could be static, and it’s his.

He’s trying to get out in front of the story. This way he can portrait himself as being outraged at someone trying to frame it.

Thank God for Twitter. People there are a lot less gullible than freepers.

No one has ever noticed his weird eyes?

""Those hackers in Russia sure did Krugman me!""

Well, it could also have been the FBI setting him up... Probably it is one of their standard operational tactics to shore up otherwise weak or non-existent case-supporting data...

No difference between that and their use of the R.I.C.O. Act... Can't find any actual evidence? No problemo... We got RICO on our side...
