This author is a raging moron.

Compulsory service would do wonders for this country.

Yeah, plus the Left has learned that you really can’t get a good antiwar movement going without a draft.

Were you involved in the draft?
Not talking about just registering with SS, but the draft?

Yep, sure did: gave all of the whiners posing as men in this country the excuse needed to avoid military service.

Those same cowards are the first to demand that women be drafted - ahead of them, of course.

I don’t agree with the premise. A little more uncertainty in the lives of our youth isn’t necessarily a bad thing.

And boo-hoo that draft boards had to make ‘hard decisions.’ That’s life, snowflake.

The author seems to want to equate military service with slavery/involuntary servitude, regardless of the Supreme Court’s 1918 decision to the contrary.

So now, instead of military service being spread more or less evenly across all walks of life, it is more or less constrained, I suspect, to the lower portion of the middle class among those who have fewer other options - excepting those patriotic young men and women whose highest calling is to serve and protect the Constitution.

I just love it when people let their literary skills overpower their analytical ones.

Happened two weeks before my 18th birthday what a relief, ended up joining the Marine Corps so a moot point. Kids live in France, they had to go one day for service which they were basically asked to join and then let go at noon.
Everyone should do two years of some type of service does not have to be military but some service to their country after high school or university.

Any draft should be all inclusive. Medical rejection should be based on military docs. No college deferments for anything other than medical service—with required service upon certification.

Real simple. Real clear.

It is impossible to keep politics out of it. But the fewer the “rules” the more difficult it is to find a loophole.

Ahhh, yes, no draft, who needs it? We have 3M? in uniform all services. That’s fine, but what will you do when you need 14M? Run to the recruiters? LOL, 2001 there were no lines at the recruiters. Dec.8+ 1941 there were lines but not enough, millions more were needed. Its good to have prior trained former military doing reserve duties, as they can be the trainers when the balloon goes up. I was in during the draft years, I had no problems working with other draftees, most had just graduated from college and performed as expected of them. In the late 60’s, Nam days, they went with what they called Cat.5 draftees, then problems arose. The military is a great place to learn responsibility and caring for those around you. With what I see today, it should be mandatory after HS. College will be taken a lot more seriously when you get out, as you will certainly have gained a degree of maturity with the experience.

I hope they BURY any official talk about compulsory draft prior to the next election.

Every single yute, male or female, of voting age will make it his/her business to pour out from sea to shining sea, from the mansions to the slums, from the schools to the streets to vote against Trump including all the way down the GOP ticket....and their parents will vote the same way also. Trust me.

“I also think there are prices too high to pay to save the United States. Conscription is one of them. Conscription is slavery, and I don’t think that any people or nation has a right to save itself at the price of slavery for anyone, no matter what name it is called. We have had the draft for twenty years now; I think this is shameful. If a country can’t save itself through the volunteer service of its own free people, then I say: Let the damned thing go down the drain!”

It is still surreal to me after all these years...
Unknown men in suits selecting ping pong balls...
Who goes and who doesn't?
It was like "un-winning" the lottery...

If they bring back the draft there should be 2 rules:

1. No college deferments.
2. The sons and grandsons of the President, Vice-President, Representatives, Senators, Federal Judges and senior Cabinet officials are the first ones called up, and barring medical leave from a military doctor, they must serve in a combat role.

My father was drafted in 1944, and was preparing to be in the invasion of Japan. Fortunately the invasion wasn't needed. I served 22 years on active duty, finally retiring from the Air Force. That included 19 months in Southeast Asia. My younger brother served a full career in the Marines, including a tour in Vietnam. During a major war a draft may be needed, but other than that I think the volunteer system is best. All the volunteers I served with were high quality people.
