REPORT: Susan Collins Is Suddenly Opposing Some of Trump’s Court Picks

After being a reliable ally to President Trump’s judicial nominees in 2017 and 2018, Susan Collins is suddenly opposing some of Trump’s court picks

Some believe Collins may be trying to win some over some goodwill from Democrats in what may be a difficult reelection cycle.

Per a PPP poll in October, Collins is unpopular, with only 35% of voters approving of the job she’s doing to 50% who disapprove. She trails a generic Democrat for reelection 44-41. That represents a big drop for Collins compared to a poll we did last September when she led a generic Democrat by 6 points at 44-38. At that time she only trailed 64-21 among Clinton voters but in the wake of her vote on Brett Kavanaugh and the general hardening of partisan lines she’s lost a lot of her crossover support and now trails 76-12 with Clinton voters. 53% of Mainers support impeaching Donald Trump with 44% opposed.

Yahoo reports Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine) didn’t cast a single vote against one of President Donald Trump’s judicial nominees in 2017 and 2018. But she suddenly got cold feet on some of his picks this year as she kicked off what’s shaping up to be one of her toughest reelection cycles yet.

Collins, the most senior Republican woman in the Senate, cast the deciding votes confirming several of Trump’s controversial nominees in recent years, including those deemed unqualified by the American Bar Association (ABA).

And though she says she’s “pro-choice,” the four-term incumbent has voted to confirm dozens of judges who have signaled they oppose abortion.

But Collins’ steadfast approval for the president’s court picks weakened in 2019 after Republicans picked up two more seats in the Senate during the previous year’s midterm elections.

She was able to oppose some of the nominees ― grabbing headlines and the goodwill of some of Maine’s Democratic-leaning voters along the way ― likely knowing full well that they would receive the confirmation votes needed from her Republican colleagues anyway.

As long as they are not blocked and she wins re-election / holds the seat as an R, I'm cool.

I am not cool with these back-stabbing, self serving RINOs. Not even a little bit.

Is she up for reelection in 2020? And if so why is she not being primaries?

Maybe it is time for her to retire and make room for another Republican who can win. Part of her low Poll numbers is because her support for Trump and the Party has always been wishy washy.

“Politicians behaving politically..business as usual.”

The majority of her constituents are moderate to liberal in philosophy. She was elected to represent them. 2020 is an election year where her constituents will determine if she is reelected or the seat goes to a Democrat. She is behaving accordingly.

How many work-a-day Mainers actually track Collins’ judge votes?

Is someone making up a story using polls? Why, NO ONE has ever done *that* before. How original of this media person.

Mockingbird.

Zackly. It’s an election year and she needs to act even more like a democrat for awhile. Linda Graham is acting all badass, too, in order to fake out his base.

Agreed but we have only a slim majority in the Senate. The current votes against judges that pass anyway is worth keeping a senator who will most likely vote with POTUS agenda more often than not.
After all it’s Maine. Is there hope of a more robust candidate getting elected?

RINOs are so stupid. All they do is piss off the base to appease idiots who still won’t vote for them. Collins is unpopular because she’s hated by both sides. Let the D win, who cares.

Cory Gardner (CO) and Martha McSally (AZ) probably are not going to win in November. So long as Moore doesn’t win the GOP nomination in AL, winning back that seat is a likelihood. But if Collins goes down in ME, that puts the Senate back to a best-case 51-49. With spiteful bitches like Murkowski and Romney waiting to damage Trump, future judge confirmations may be slowed wayyyy down.

Unless someone can name a DEMOCRAT who can hold a candle to her voting record on judges, even now, I’m cool with her too.

The time for ‘purity’ in the Republican Party is only AFTER we dispatch the Democrats (considering what they are trying to do to the country), and we still have a way to go in dispatching them.

[by the way, don’t waste your time looking for Democrats better than Collins...they don’t exist]

This is an ongoing debate, as to whether we should support RINO or less than conservative Republicans, just because they are Republicans.

I don’t want to see Democrats take over the Senate.
