New Zealand Held a Gun Buyback Program. Numbers Reveal How Much of a Flop It Really Was.

Shortly after the terrorist attack that left 51 dead in Christchurch, New Zealand earlier this year, Prime Minster Jacinda Ardern vowed to ban all semi-automatic rifles. The firearms that were used in the attack were legally obtained but illegally modified.

The "assault weapons ban" was finalized and Friday was the last day for New Zealanders to hand over the newly banned firearms as part of a so-called "buyback program."

The government set aside $110 million to compensate gun owners for their firearms. In total, the government collected 47,000 firearms. An accounting firm the government hired determined that the number of banned guns is estimated between 50,000 and 170,000. The exact number, however, is unknown because the country does not have a registry for what they call "military style assault rifles."

The numbers sound like a success, at least on the gun control front, right? Wrong.

So, will overcrowding in the jails be the next issue for the non-compliant? If they can find out who they are? As for the bad guys?! They don't care anyway.

New Zealand has a big problem with Maori criminal gangs, and their gangstas are no more wont to turn in the tools of their trade than ours are. I wouldn’t be surprised if at least a large minority, if not slight majority, of “gun owners” in New Zealand aren’t criminals and gang members.

Government idiocy at its best, i.e., a government offering to “buy back” something it did not sell in the first place!!

Personally I consider gun buy-back programs a great opportunity to dump crappy old guys for money to buy great new guns.

Wow. New Zealanders have a lot of guns. They also have a LOT of boats.

There recently have been many thousands of boat accidents in New Zealand where New Zealanders lost their guns overboard.

Hell, you can see them out there on the waters every weekend, fishing at the same time they are dragging the bottom.

Since US small arms ownership per capita is more than 4 times that of NZ, gov’t would have to buy over 200,000 guns here to have the same alleged impact.

Data for those who care about actual facts:

And 70 times the "capita" (people). We're talking 140 million guns for the same effect in the U.S.

Makes sense. Gun owners vote conservative. Only criminals vote RAT.

It’s not buy back. The government didn’t sell them to the people. It’s confiscation.

Their goal is to take guns from non-violent, honest people, while deliberately leaving them in the hands of violent criminals. And, as another poster said, release criminals from jail and put the honest people in jail as they criminalize responsible gun ownership.

The ‘buyback’ was NEVER meant to ‘succeed’ using a standard definition of the term, instead it was meant to give the government political cover when the NEXT STEPS take place, which will be something like the following:

1: High profile prosecutions and long jail sentences, to a few holdouts who are somehow discovered (such as from their databases, their ex’s, coworkers, or used in self-defense). The media will make it a point to let other gun owners know that the people being prosecuted are not kooks are survivalists, but rather ordinary, hard working, citizens. Note that this (active grabbing) will capture, at most, 1% of the remaining guns.

2: Nice letters to the remaining 99% telling them they’ve been identified (via databases) and that they have one final chance to comply, without jail time...this time without the ‘buyback’.

3: Announcement of the end to all amnesties, although those who come forward voluntarily (not requiring a follow-up notice, or police raid) will be given a lesser sentence (non-Felony), although they’ll still have a criminal record.

4: Increasing levels of punishment for the remaining hold-outs - felonies for all who non-comply.

At the end of #3 above, they’ll have 99% of the weapons turned in, without violence. And no, the boat accident defense won’t work, unless coupled with a police report (and then you better not be caught with weapons of those same serial numbers).

In summary once government HOLDS ALL OF THE CARDS, they can do as they please, and the recent articles in Virginia tells me that they plan on doing something very much like the above. And no, there won’t be an uprising - maybe cute to dream about, but not going to happen, just a few holdouts who are dealt with Ruby Ridge style.

The point of the above is for people to understand that voting to ENABLE DEMOCRATS (such as sitting out November elections because of a RINO, or voting Libertarian), will give those Democrats ABSOLUTE POWER, and, as we see in New Zealand, and are starting to see in Virginia, once they have that power, it’s GAME OVER for gun owners...just a matter of time.

That will be 50,000 rifles the Chinese army and navy will not have to face when they com knocking on NZ’s door.

Reminds me of England and NZ in WW II.

Memoirs of the Second World War by Winston Churchill

“Yes, after Dunkirk; after the fall of France; after the horrible episode of Oran; after the threat of invasion, when, apart from the Air and the Navy, we were an almost unarmed people;...”

NZ in WW II... PAY ATTENTION TO THE LAST PARAGRAPH! Almost like England after Dunkirk when, unarmed, they prepared to repel a nazi invasion with those great traditional English weapons, the hay rake, garden hoe, pitchfork and scythe.

From FReeper Savage Beast

New Zealand during World War II, before it succumbed to the insanity of the decadence of Western Civilization:

“A frightful Japanese broadcast has steeled us for the worst. It came through two nights before I left. A Japanese professor was describing New Zealand and how it would be developed by the Japanese.”

“Maoris, as true members of the Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere, will be allowed special priveleges. White men will be used on the farms. He said that the lush fields, the wealth, the cities were in their grasp at last. The day of reckoning with insolent New Zealanders was at hand. Immortal Japanese troops would know what to do.”

“The old men—well, your wife’s father and mine, for example. They are stationed at the beaches. They know they dare not retreat. They have taken their positions now.”

“The home guard is next. They have been digging in furiously. They occupy prepared positions near the cities and the best beaches. The regular army will be thrown in as the fighting develops. Everyone has decided to fight until the end. The cities and villages will be destroyed.”

“Many families have gone to the hills. Cars are waiting to take the others at the first sign of the Jap fleet. My wife and the kiddies have gone. Your wife...said to tell you that she will stay until the last.”

“It was my humble duty to assist in preparing the defenses of Auckland. I issued several thousand picks, crowbars, and axes. There were no other weapons.”

It’s waaaay more than I thought would ever be turned in when they don’t know who has them. If those estimates are anywhere close to legit anyhow.
