GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Second-time U.S. Senate candidate John James has earned the endorsement of the Michigan Republican State Committee.

***

James is a combat veteran and a businessman in Detroit who ran an unsuccessful campaign against Democratic Sen. Debbie Stabenow in 2018. Should James win the Republican nomination in 2020, he will face off against incumbent Democrat Gary Peters.

Before the endorsement, James got support from Vice President Mike Pence during his stop in Holland this month.

He’s a good man, a Vet. Too bad he didn’t much support last time he ran from the GOP.

He got outspent 2-1 last time and only lost by around 6 percentage points. Maybe with some support, he can win. Trump will certainly be in Michigan a good bit. This is a race to watch.

Pence supported him last time, too. Didn't help.

Debbie Stabinaw beat him, 52.3% to 45.8%. That's not really close. What has changed to make him more attractive? The loss was only a years ago, most people voted against him once. Is there any reason to believe they won't again.

Michigan should be a winnable State for the Republicans, after all Trump narrowly won it in 2020.

I'm not that familiar with his positions or what his 2018 campaign was like, but he's got a short resume and maybe he's just not what Michigan voters are looking for.

I hope that a better candidates comes out of the woodwork for this one.

I'm projecting there a bit: "Trump narrowly won it in 2020" should be "in 2016".

Maybe they could run some ads for him this time?

Last time not a single TV or radio ad in my area. Not even a billboard ad. Granted we are just outside a democrat city but there are republican towns.

The only ads I saw for him were on YouTube.

only lost by around 6 percentage points

That's huge. That's not close for a U.S. Senate race.

The Michigan GOP seems to have a weak farm-team. Maybe that goes for most of the GOP. James is trying to enter politics at the Senate level.

What about the old tried and true method of winning some other race before going for the Senate? In Oregon and Washington we tend to have the same failure mode. Some guy who's never won any race goes for the Gov. or Senate, has some money, so can beat primary challengers, but gets crushed by the Dem machines'

He was outspent 2-1 in a midterm election against a 3 term incumbent. 6 points is a solid win, but that was much closer than what was projected. Stabenow had beaten her previous two opponents by between 15 and 20 points. The idea is that he could win with some support and if President Trump has coattails. I don’t know if Peters is as well-supported as Stabenow in MI or not. Trump is gaining in MI. That’s why James probably has at least a shot.

He’s a nice guy but a dull speaker. I doubt this time will be any better than the last.

What has changed is that 2020 is a presidential election year. 2018 was a bad year for republicans. But John James got more votes than the 2018 republican candidate for governor (who lost) and other republicans running for state-wide office in Michigan.

Even though I’m back in the Keys, I’m a strong supporter of John’s; he was a brilliant Army commander, a strong campaigner and intelligent man. I met him several times during the last campaign. I strongly endorse him!

Gary Peters is already running TV ads saying how ‘moderate’ he is.

Must be the RATS have some polling that Peters is beatable.

Debbie Stabenow had a long history of supporting farm issues, and received strong support from Michigan Farm Bureau. There were many ads from MiFB members who said they had always voted R in most races, but were voting for Stabenow.

Peters does not have that record.

MiFB will determine its endorsement in August, but I doubt it will be Peters.

Yeah. Who in the hell did that guy Trump think he was, running for President before he won some other political race.

Of all the nerve.

I'm sending him a $100. And another $100 to Trump for a Christmas/Impeachment present.

James is a potential rock star for the GOP.

They should dump huge bucks on this guy.
