LONDON The joggers and runners of the world certainly have reason to smile, according to a new international study. Researchers from Australia, Austria, Finland, and Thailand performed a comprehensive analysis on available evidence, and concluded that any amount of running significantly lowers ones risk of death from any cause.
If more people all over the world incorporated just a little bit of running into their day-to-day lives, the studys authors say the global population would see great improvements in both overall health and longevity. To be clear, the research team stress that people dont have to run particularly far, or even very fast, whats important is simply engaging in the act.
The researchers say they were motivated to perform the study because of a number of unknowns that still remained in reference to runnings health benefits. For example, it was never clear just how effective running is at preventing cardiovascular disease or cancer, or for that matter, exactly how much running an individual must participate in to reap such benefits.
So, in an effort to try and answer some of these questions, the research team reviewed any available and relevant published research, conference presentations, and doctoral dissertations. Specifically, they looked for studies that had investigated the association between running and subsequent risk of death from all causes, cancer, or cardiovascular issues....

A former boss didn't smoke and jogged and ran extensively. He was probably the same weight as when he was in college. Went in for minor surgery and the post op nurse called a "code blue" on him because his pulse was 38. Finally, his wife told the nurse that was normal for him.
Last year I learned he died at the age of 78. Couldn't believe someone in that fine physical condition didn't make it past 80. Well, who knows what will kill you?

So strange - i’ve run many thousands of miles in my life and my knees and ankles are holding up just fine. yet i know people who have never run that have had joints replaced.
I do cringe when i see people running on concrete. And i knew a guy (with a degree from MIT) who insisted on running in combat boots. Now running may well destroy those people’s joints!
I read that the men on one side (his fathers side I think) never made it past their late forties. Partly genetic I guess.
Which was a lot older then the men in his family lived. Oops!
I think if you sit in a recliner chair that vibrates you would get all the exercise you need..... : )

Could be, but he was already a millionaire. However, she may have finally gotten even for all those years he cheated on her.
I worked at a hospital. When they called an AAA it was the only procedure that did not require scrubbing in. There was no time. You threw on gloves and dived right in.
It was mostly a futile excercise.
Have you asked them what studies they are citing? I’ve looked for any studies that have compared longevity for those various exercises and haven’t found any. Okay - I haven’t done an exhaustive search.
Can you give us those studies? Thank you.
Jim Fixx had a family history of heart disease. While a shock at the time, no one should have been surprised based on his family history. He thought his running could overcome a bad family medical history. He was wrong.
What they told me was not based on any particular studies.
They were alluding to the fact that exercising the cardio system on a regular basis is very much they same as running your automobile engine for 20 to 30 minutes 4 times a week. Doing so keeps the battery charged, the valves and pistons lubricated, and activates the auto's overall system.(use it or lose it)
