Oregon officers can no longer ask random questions during traffic stops. An attorney hopes more states will follow

When Mario Arreola-Botello was pulled over, he didn't understand much of what the Oregon police officer was telling him.

Botello, a Latino, non-native English speaker, was stopped for failing to signal a turn and a lane change, his attorney, Josh Crowther told CNN.

What happened next sparked a years-long court battle that landed at the state's supreme court. In a November ruling, the court decided officers in the state were no longer allowed to ask questions that were irrelevant to the reason of the traffic stop.

It's an issue that's often been tackled in courts across the country, but a University of North Carolina professor says there's never been a decision as "wide-reaching" as this one.

And that's a problem because he says young black and Latino men are often targeted disproportionally when it comes to random car searches.

"It really convinces people that they're not full citizens, that police are viewing them as suspects,"

How about “you aren’t really 23 are you”?

It really isn’t a big deal. I was pulled over in East Hampton, CT, and the policeman politely asked, “What’s the capital of South Dakota?” I responded, “Is it … Pierre?” Then I was told I was free to go. No problem, really.

"Are you in this country legally?"

I think every officer should be allowed to ask that.

Nopt taking sides in this, but do know that to receive your US citizenship you MUST demonstrate proficiency in English, both written and spoken.

So, how can this guy “not understand” and, by the way, why do we have voting ballots printed in spanish?

I have spent a chunk of time there. No matter what you call it I still call it a dump in the middle of nowhere.

I called it Pee-air until I learned it’s pronounced peer.

Had a cop pull my for speeding once and asked me if I had any guns, knives, or nuclear weapons in the car.

““Is it … Pierre?””

Just answer the question and stop trying to channel Senator Delecto.

Heck if I know, that's yankee territory.

Would anyone up north bail me out of jail? LOL

I was pulled over in East Hampton, CT, and the policeman politely asked, “What’s the capital of South Dakota?”

A few years ago I was crossing the US/Canadian border heading home.A US border guard was trying to give me a hard time for some reason. He asked me where I lived and I said "Boston suburbs" then he asked me what I did and I told him I was a retired hospital administrator. I guess he didn't believe me so he asked where the Mayo Clinic was and I told him their main campus is in Rochester,Minnesota and they have satellite facilities in Florida and Arizona.

With that he let me pass through. God only knows what he had in mind...I wasn't smuggling anything.

I don’t think police should be asking irrelevant, instrusive or personal questions. Asking drivers where they are coming from, where they are goong, and other such questions are none of their business.

I seriously doubt that THEY would be OK with someone else asking their spouse or kids probing questions that have no bearing on the supposed infraction.

There have to be limits on this kind of intrusive police tactic.
