Russia's only aircraft carrier, Admiral Kuznetsov, caught fire on Thursday morning during repair work in Russia's Arctic Sea port of Murmansk, according to Russian state news agencies.

Admiral Kuznetsov, launched in the mid-1980s, is an unlucky ship. It has spent most of its 30-year life tied up in port undergoing repairs for various mishaps that have occurred on the rare occasions it has gone to sea. And when it does sail, it is always escorted by a tugboat.

Despite the problems with the ship, the Kremlin has in recent years leaned heavily on it to project an image of resurgent Russian naval strength. But problems have continued to arise, limiting the impact of the ship’s image to Russian state media audiences.

The ship was sent on a high-profile deployment to Syria in 2017, passing through the English Channel...

it isn’t a single “unlucky” ship. historically, the russian navy has been a comprehensive failure.

this is just continuing the tradition.

lol. I jumped over to wiki to make sure I correctly remembered this floating horror show’s age, and someone had updated it’s status (eg “active duty”, “decommissioned”, etc) to “on fire”.

hosers.

Of course. However, we have more ‘Navy’, therefore more chances for accidents. I’ll bet our accident ratio is much lower. Russia is still having modern submarine disasters.

There are fires just about every day on a U.S.Carriers. We just have the training to put them out when small and keep them from spreading. We have had our own problems with Carrier fires.
