Assignment asks middle schoolers 'How many slaves would equal 4 white people?' KANNAPOLIS, N.C. — A local middle school social studies assignment is raising serious concerns. Students at Kannapolis Middle School were asked how many slaves would be needed to equal at least four white people. The question was asked as part of a lesson on the Three-Fifths Compromise, which is a 1700's law to count slaves as less than white people. Content Continues Below

But, parents are wondering why a teacher would think the assignment was acceptable. [‘Set your price for a slave': Missouri teacher placed on leave after controversial class assignment] One mother told Channel 9 that she has talked to the superintendent, the principal and other school leaders about the assignment. “It angers me that our children are being subject to such insensitive and disgusting assignments in this day and age,” she said. Parent Dorel Simmons said he's worked for the school district and the assignment doesn't reflect the teachers and staff. He said he wonders why a teacher would ask the questions. "There definitely needs to be some sensitivity training," he said.

The Constitution originally set 3/5 of a white person as the value for apportionment purposes.

Now if these kiddies can actually do that math I’ll be shocked. But the question MIGHT have some historic validity.
(I know, in 2019 “educators” should never be given the benefit of that doubt)

The southern states should not have been allowed ANY voting apportionemnt for the people they held in bondage.

It was a compromise with the Democrats that resulted in slaves only being counted as 3/5 of a person.

The Republicans wanted them to be counted as a full person like anyone else.

That is an important part that should have been included in the lesson.

"There definitely needs to be some sensitivity training," he said.

I would argue that "sensitivity training" is probably how we got into this sorry state in the first place.

Teach math.
Teach history.
Teach civics.

Stop being so Sensitive and Correct. Stop the Social Engineering. Stop trying to warp young minds. Just teach the facts.

“’How many slaves would equal 4 white people?’

It depends on when the new models come out and the current interest rates.

The question is a trick question regardless.

There are a variety of ways in which two persons are equivalent, and a lot of ways in which they aren’t - both regardless of race. This applies historically as well.

The question, without further criteria, is useless except as a gotcha question to expose presuppositions.

Well, when the 3/5 compromise was agreed to, today’s Republican and Democrat parties didn’t exist.

My recollection was that the Southern states wanted slaves counted in full, while Northern states didn’t want slaves counted at all. Is that why this 3/5 was put into the constitution?

It's not 3/5 of a person. They would include 3/5 of the population held in bondage for purposes of representation and the apportionment of taxes. They didn't believe the slaves to be only 3/5 of a person. They simply would only count 3/5 of that population. This 3/5 of a person nonsense is pure leftist revisionism. Read the relevant portion of the Constitution for yourselves.

Article 1, Section 2, Clause 3: Representatives and direct Taxes shall be apportioned among the several States which may be included within this Union, according to their respective Numbers, which shall be determined by adding to the whole Number of free Persons, including those bound to Service for a Term of Years, and excluding Indians not taxed, three fifths of all other Persons.

Don’t know about slaves but if you’re talking today’s demonrats of any race, they couldn’t pay me enough to take one.

The 3/5th Compromise had nothing to do with a slave’s monetary or any other worth but with the number of House of Representatives the Southern states got. Similar to the Democratic party today wanting to include illegals and allow them to vote simply for congressional seats.

Nothing wrong with teaching this history if the teacher wasn’t teaching with an agenda and lies.

1) "Democrat" and "Republican" did not exist when the Constitution was being drafted.

2) Delegates to the Constitutional Convention who came from significantly slaveholding States wanted to count free and bonded residents equally for the purpose of Congressional apportionment. Delegates from significantly free States wanted to count only free citizens for the purpose of Congressional apportionment. Nobody wanted to count Indians.

This is an important part that should have been included in the lesson.

The Republicans wanted them to be counted as a full person like anyone else.

Are you sure? I thought the Republicans did not want slaves to be counted at all. Counting the slaves gave the slave states a higher population total when it came to apportionment for the House. It was not really fair to count the slaves as people because they had no rights. So, the 3/5 compromise was reached in answer to the argument that the slave states had to invest time and money in "caring" for the slave population. At least, that is how I remember it.

The answer is 4

Two logical reasons:
1: the Dreds Scott decision was a ridiculous abuse which should have been ignored, and was, by many, as the Roe V Wade is

2:

In 1868, the Fourteenth Amendment overturned the Dred Scott decision by granting citizenship to all those born in the United States

Is that why this 3/5 was put into the constitution?

Yes. The issue was how much political power the South would have. Political power (representatives in the House and votes in the Electoral College) is based on population. If the South had a large population, the South would have more power. The North wanted the South to have reduced political power.

3/5 was a compromise which gave the South some political power based on slave populations, but not full power.
