Beshear says he will sign order Thursday restoring voting rights of 100,000+ felons

In his inaugural address, Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear said he will file an executive order this week restoring the voting rights of many convicted felons who are currently disenfranchised under state law.

“My faith teaches me to treat others with dignity and respect,” the new Democratic governor told his audience outside the state Capitol. “My faith also teachers forgiveness.”

“That’s why on Thursday I will sign an executive order restoring voting rights to over a hundred thousand men and women who have done wrong in the past but are doing right now. They deserve to participate in our great democracy,” Beshear said.

The speech offered no details about Beshear’s forthcoming order, which felons would be covered or how the restoration process would work.

Of the 50 states, only Kentucky and Iowa still deny the right to vote to anyone convicted of a felony. Iowa’s governor is calling for a constitutional amendment to restore voting rights to felons in her state.

Kentucky has an estimated 242,000 felons who are disenfranchised despite having completed their sentences, according to a 2016 report by the Sentencing Project, a criminal-justice reform advocacy group. That includes one in every four of the state’s African-American adults, according to the report.

Under Kentucky’s Constitution, voting rights can be restored solely by the governor.

Murderers took away the victim’s right to vote for eternity. The murderer should never have voting rights restored

It does not say that he has to do this on a case by case basis.

The word "Arms" in the second amendment does not specify what "Arms" mean, but precedent establishes what the word means without having to define it.

The normal precedent for pardons is a case by case basis, and unless evidence to the contrary emerges, that should be the accepted understanding of the pardon power.

The notion that a governor can simply overturn all convictions with a blanket pardon was not contemplated by the legislature in drawing up that constitution, and so should not be accepted as within the governors purview.

Agree or disagree I think this is well within his constitutional authority.

Well I disagree. It is reading into the words a meaning and scope they were never intended to have.

Ex-cons don’t particularly vote RAT. Few vote at all. You need to find some other way to fix the elections

I agree.

Personally I never understood why someone who served their time lost their right to vote. I am sure at one time there was a reason but I never bothered to find out what that was.

As for assuming all 100,000 would vote Democrat is wrong. I would suspect that most will not bother to vote. So in the end the Democrats will not really gain many votes.

“My faith teaches me to treat others with dignity and respect,” the new Democratic governor told his audience outside the state Capitol.

Does this also apply to the unborn? If so, how long will it be before Beshear pushes to overthrow abortion in Kentucky? /sarc

PRECISELY!

ELECTIONS HAVE CONSEQUENCES!

Rich Logis in American Thinker: "The Democratic Party is the most dangerous group in the history of our republic, foreign or domestic — more than the Islamic supremacists, more than the Nazis, more than the Soviets and more than the communists."

Let this be fair warning to ALL AMERICANS!

What happens when LIEberal Democrats are elected to public office?

LIEberal Democrats LIE TO, CHEAT AND STEAL FROM the Citizenry!

LIEberal Democrats routinely violate the law and ignore the US Constitution!

TAXMAN: “A vote for ANY LIEberal, whether it be in a local, state or federal election, is a vote against America!”

POTUS: “A vote for any Democrat in 2020 is a vote for the rise of radical socialism and the destruction of the American dream!”

TAXMAN: “America cannot survive a LIEberal victory in 2020!”

Removing the voting and firearm rights of felons, once they have served their sentence, has never been constitutional.

Given that the recidivism rate for Kentucky felons was 41% (after 2 yrs; 43% after 3 yrs), Gov. Beshear should pull his Hotel from being jammed up his Alpha and address that problem rather than getting himself more votes. What inbreds elected this clown?!?

Good question.

Honestly, if you have righteously done your time, you should be restored to full citizenship.

Every time a former felon commits murder or rape remind folks that this guy restored his right to vote.

How bad must Bevin have been? My paternal roots are Kentucky and I have a bunch of distant kin still there. I hate to think they voted for this carbuncle.

“You serve your time, you should get to vote, “

I tend to agree with that. If this were the case all along where those that have served their time were automatically restored voting right this would not be an issue right now.

My point is many ex-felons will likely vote rat as a thank you if done right now all at once.

I also believe those ex-cons never convicted of a violent crime should have their gun rights restored.
