Artist Kehinde Wiley’s monumental bronze sculpture of a young black man astride a galloping horse is set to be permanently installed in Virginia’s capital city, not far from the Confederate monument it mimics.

Wiley is known for his paintings of black Americans and his commissioned portrait of former President Barack Obama, displayed at the National Portrait Gallery.
He is scheduled to give remarks Tuesday, along with Gov. Ralph Northam, Richmond Mayor Levar Stoney and others. Hundreds are expected to attend.

What a joke. Richmond could have commissioned an artist to do a statue of Lincoln entering Richmond being escorted by cavalry from the US Coloured troops .
I'm not aware of an artist known for "his paintings of white Americans". And if there were such an artist, he'd be branded a White Supremacist and his works would be banned from public.
These double standards have got to go.

Not sure I get it. Is the kid on the galloping horse supposed to be fleeing the Confederate monument? Is the purpose of the new statue just to antagonize whitey in the same vein as the statue of the little girl standing up to the bull on Wall Street?

There is nothing “Lost Cause” for honoring our ancestors both North and South. I say this as someone whose ancestors were Union and Confederate and also included Confederate supporting Cherokee Indians.
He’s very good, technically. He’s the one who did Obama’s official portrait. The statue looks good, although the rider looks like he has breasts from some angles. He made it as a counter to the equestrian statues of Confederate generals, although I don’t quite get the connection.

It described the painting as showing “a tall, elegant black woman in a long blue dress. In one hand, she holds a knife. In the other, a cleanly severed brunette female head”. Wiley said about his work: “It’s sort of a play on the ‘kill whitey’ thing”.[23][6] Wiley exhibited a second similar painting, also in 2012. It also features a black woman holding a knife in one hand and a white female severed head in the other hand.”
So there’s that, too.
Rumors of what war? The press never says.

Virginia needs a statue of Anthony Johnson for being a early property owner in the Virginia Colony.
