"Brown highlighted what he feels are low pensions for older retired players. For those who retired before 1993, the rate is about $2,500 a month for a player who spent seven years in the league. Brown called it “shockingly, immorally, low.”

Poor babies. Made it to the pinnacle of their sport, were extremely well-compensated for the duration, but “only” get an average of $2,500.00 a month pension.

Well, try the real world in most of the private sector with NO pension whatsoever.

My give-a-damn’s busted as far as NFL whining.

https://www.cnbc.com/2019/02/01/heres-what-the-average-nfl-players-makes-in-a-season.html

“The minimum annual salary for a rookie active roster player with a one-year contract is $480,000, according to the collective bargaining agreement the NFL signed in 2011 with the NFL Players Association, which will be in effect until 2020.

That minimum increases for each year a player spends in the NFL. A player with three years’ experience would command a salary equal to at least $705,000, while players with seven to nine years on the field must be paid at least $915,000.”

First-string stars make millions. The grunts make a few hundred K, and are replaced within a year or two with younger players unless they show promise of becoming a star.

I agree with JB. The League and Union are awash in megabucks but it wasn’t always so. The guys who sacrificed so much for the game ought to be taken care of better than this.

$2500/month for life for seven years on the job (prior to 1993 - 25 years ago) is not too bad. Can’t live fat on it, but its better than a sharp stick in the eye.

He is a rich man and doesn’t need the NFL. But there are a LOT of offensive/defensive lineman and running backs who took a beating and are on hard times now. I get that it’s entertainment and no one forced them to play football. And I also get that they all probably could have taken their free college more seriously and gone into other professions or tired to get a job within the NFL. The analogy to the NBA is laughable. The NBA has 12 players on a the roster. The NFL has almost 100 between regular and practice players. Can’t compare the two.

Boo hoo. Crocodile tears.

$2,500 per month? That's more pension than most NFL fans get--combined.

$00.00 X millions = 0

Consider, too, that unless they're totally disabled they haven't been sitting idle since their retirement from the league. They've had ample opportunity to earn and set aside additional income, not to mention their Social Security benefits.

If they only play a few years why do they deserve a pension?

I am pretty sure that players in the modern era that played more than seven years receive three hundred thousand/year or so. Big bucks. Not sure for those that play just a few seasons.

That is embarrassingly low... but if that is what both sides agreed to.. it is what it is....

Bunch of 20somethings were probably offered better pensions but less pay... and you know what they almost certainly took.

Also keep in mind the working life span of a typical NFL player is short... typically. The average career over all positions is just 2.5 years.

Perhaps this has something to do with the wage inflation since the old days? If that’s the case then nobody is at fault for the relatively lower payouts.

“that is why they are paid so much right?”

Apples and oranges.
Jim Brown played in an era when the average salary for a veteran was $6,000/season.
Those guys, even the stars like Brown, worked side jobs.

In the 1970’s the minimum pay for a rookie was $9,000/season.
A vet could expect $10,000/season.
The pay did start to jump in the 80’s when the USFL was a thing.
https://careertrend.com/how-much-money-do-baseball-players-make-13655594.html

Presently minimum salary is...
Practice squad $8,000/week
Rookie $$480,000/season
10+ year veteran $1,015,000/season

Men like Jim Brown made the NFL Must See TV.
Snowflakes and SJW’s lap up the cream while destroying the goose that lays the golden eggs.

I don’t blame Jim.

Russell Wilson seems to be a pretty good guy off the field...although he sucked last night. I would buy this if it was real since I do a lot of NFL betting

No kidding.

I am willing bet I’ve paid more into social security than the NFL players union ever received form these guy and yet I’m still well more than a decade away form being able to draw a bit more than that-—Had zero choice on that either

If it is St. Clares in Schenectady, NY you got nothing, the account apparently went missing and the Governor of NY has yet to find out why.
