In the 1970’s the minimum pay for a rookie was $9,000/season.
A vet could expect $10,000/season.
The pay did start to jump in the 80’s when the USFL was a thing.

The NFL never was “must see TV” and the sport will eventually fade into obscurity. Here in Texas, even the once ubiquitous obsession with high school and college ball is noticeably beginning to fray at the seems.
