$2500/month for life for seven years on the job (prior to 1993 - 25 years ago) is not too bad. Can’t live fat on it, but its better than a sharp stick in the eye.
Consider, too, that unless they're totally disabled they haven't been sitting idle since their retirement from the league. They've had ample opportunity to earn and set aside additional income, not to mention their Social Security benefits.
