Dr. Tetsu Nakamura left his home in Japan in the 1980s to treat leprosy patients in Afghanistan and Pakistan. He later found, however, that severe drought was killing more people than his clinics could save.
So he discovered a new calling: irrigation. In the 2000s, adapting old Japanese techniques that required little technology, he helped villagers displaced by drought build a network of canals that has transformed an area of nearly a million residents.
A doctor treats patients one by one, but this helps a whole village, Dr. Nakamura had said. I love seeing a village thats been brought back to life.
On Wednesday, Dr. Nakamura was attacked by gunmen while driving to work in Jalalabad, the capital of Nangarhar Province, in eastern Afghanistan. Five members of his organizations staff were killed, and Dr. Nakamura was wounded fatally. He was 73.
He was operated on in Nangarhar hospital, but he had received several bullet wounds, said Attaullah Khogyani, a spokesman for the provinces governor. Dr. Nakamura died as they were rushing him to the local airport to fly him to the medical facility at the American military base in Bagram, Mr. Khogyani said.
It was the latest case in a series of attacks targeted at humanitarian workers in Afghanistan, just a week after an American working for the United Nations was killed in an explosion striking his vehicle in the capital, Kabul. Dr. Nakamuras murder was particularly brutal, sending shocks of grief around Afghanistan and drawing widespread condemnation. No militant group has yet claimed responsibility: The Taliban denied involvement, said a Taliban spokesman, Zabihullah Mujahid.
The killing came on a day the State Department announced its peace envoy, Zalmay Khalilzad, was on the road again after President Trump declared the resumption of talks with the Taliban

Islam is always Islam.
The answer to 9/11 was a complete travel ban with most Mid-east, North African and South Asian nations into the USA.
The Washington deep state felt that spending several $$ trillions, 20 years of occupation and warfare in Afghanistan, and Muslim immigration into the West was the preferred solution.
The locals know who did this.
They should catch them and hang them.
How sad. Someone devotes themselves to humanitarian causes in one of the worlds hell holes, and his reward is being murdered.
At this point who knows? Could be CIA. There are too many bad actors involved in the world’s opium supply.
If I had my druthers, I would have nuked the whole Middle East.
No good deed goes unpunished, as the saying goes I guess.
7th century troglodytes with no impulse control.
So 1. the headline makes mere footnotes of the other five victims, and 2. how is "killed" different from "wounded fatally"? So he died a short time later, that still counts as "killed", doesn't it, or, vice versa, the other five were also "wounded fatally". Some more crappy writing from the NYT, there.
PS: Even the headline states that he was “killed”.
I was told by the last president that the mooslims are brilliant mathematicians and scientists. Why did the old Japanese guy have to show them what’s what?
“The Washington deep state felt that spending several $$ trillions, 20 years of occupation and warfare in Afghanistan, and Muslim immigration into the West was the preferred solution.”
No... They felt that keeping billions of dollars of Middle Eastern MONEY flowing into the political coffers was the preferred solution.
There they go again, making their god so proud.
Bloody savages!!
Build a wall around the whole of the middle east and let them kill each other.
Islam is a sh*stain on the underwear of humanity and Muhammad was a dirtbag pedophile.
it’s what one expects from actual savages ...
Let these ingrate savages die of thirst. I won’t lose any sleep over them, after reading this.
“Kill the infidel wherever you find him”
