Things turned spicy on Channel 9 this morning during a heated debate about Australian tennis legend Margaret Court.
The panel on Sports Sunday was discussing how Tennis Australia (TA) handled its announcement yesterday it had invited Court to attend the Australian Open as a special guest to mark the 50-year anniversary of her incredible 1970 Grand Slam, when she won all four majors.
In the same statement yesterday, TA also delivered Court a stinging backhand by saying it does not agree with her views that gay marriage should not be legal, which have hurt and demeaned many in our community.
TA then went a step further, publishing an open letter saying publicly stated views of intolerance and demeaning language have no place in the sport.
Australian tennis great Todd Woodbridge praised Tennis Australias handling of the situation, as did Sydney Morning Herald rugby writer Georgina Robinson, before she took exception with the attitude of former Wallaby Peter FitzSimons.
FitzSimons, a noted critic of opponents to gay marriage, like Court and Israel Folau, asked Woodbridge whether hed ever tried to talk to Court and tell her she was wrong, which Robinson said was a hugely arrogant position to take.
FitzSimons:Todd, youre a leading member of the Australian tennis community. She is a leading member of the Australian tennis community. Have you ever tried to sit down, beyond the press releases and say, Margaret, please, on this stuff, youre just so out of kilter, youre wrong. Have you ever tried personally talking to her?
Woodbridge: I spoke to Margaret at the Fed Cup, but not about what youre talking about.
FitzSimons: Why didnt you try? Isnt it your duty to try?
Robinson: That would be hugely arrogant.
FitzSimons: Why?
Robinson: Because its her religious belief.

She played mixed doubles with Marty Riessen of Evanston.
Does anyone remember the little girl who was a Famous tennis player in the seventies. Wore pigtails, had a two handed back hand.
Tracy Austin?
Chris Evert?
Someone needs to tell her that it’s very unfashionable these days to be normal.
Andrea Jaeger played great tennis and was an Anglican(?) nun for a while as well.
LGBTFOAD!
The tennis press is in a tizzy over this story, can’t figure out how to promote a female icon who isn’t PC and, worse, is a Christian minister.
Court won more major titles than any other player, 24 (Serena Williams has 23 and Federer has 20) and next Australian Open will mark the 50th anniversary of her 1970 Grand Slam sweep (she won 6 consecutive titles). The “calendar” Grand Slam is a unique accomplishment achieved by only 4 other players, Don Budge (1, 1938), Maureen Connolly (1, 1953), Rod Laver (2, 1962 & 1969), and Steffi Graff (1, 1988).
It’s especially galling to the leftist tennis press that Serena can’t match Court’s record, but they have to keep face and respect Court’s accomplishments. Meanwhile, we’ll be getting more and more potshots at her as the Aussie Open comes.
Btw, 2 years ago at Melbourne, Tennys Sandgren had a remarkable run from nowhere to the quarterfinals. He was suddenly famous and the press picked up a Tweet he had sent out, from obscurity, critical of Serena, and he was attacked relentlessly over it. Oh, and Tennys is a “known” Christian.
Tennis Australia (TA) hurts children.
yes Tracy Austin.
Thank you.
riggs beat court?
I thought it was billie jesn king?
This is exactly what they expect.
Yes, he beat Court in the first match.
Riggs was a notorious gambler and hustler. Sometime later, Billie Jean King challenged him which is really odd since she was not as highly rated as Court and Riggs had really beaten Court badly.
All the money was on Riggs and guess who lost?
I think the question was whether he threw the game??
