Mexico warns will not allow US military operations against cartels

Mexico's President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador warned Friday he would not allow the US to conduct cross-border armed operations, after Donald Trump vowed to designate Mexican drug cartels as terrorist groups.

The US president has been talking tough on the powerful drug cartels since one was allegedly responsible for the massacre of nine women and children from a US-Mexican Mormon community in northern Mexico on November 4.

Trump tweeted after the killings that the US was ready to help Mexico "wage war on the drug cartels," and he followed up this week by vowing to add Mexican cartels to the US blacklist of Foreign Terrorist Organizations.

That insulted national pride in Mexico, which resents a long history of armed interventions by its giant northern neighbor, and where Trump's comments have been taken as a threat of armed cross-border operations.

"Armed foreigners cannot intervene in our territory. We will not allow that," Lopez Obrador said.

He was quick to add that he considered any such operations unlikely, saying there was "great cooperation" between the neighbors and that Trump had always treated him "respectfully."

"In the unlikely case that a decision is taken that we consider affects our sovereignty, then we will act within the framework of international law, but I see it as unlikely," said the leftist leader, who took office one year ago.

US Attorney General William Barr will visit Mexico City next week for talks, said Mexican Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard.

Lopez Obrador, for his part, is due to meet Monday with family members of the slain Mormons.

I have been going just across the border for years to do volunteer work. The Cartel is kind of like the Japanese Mafia, much involved in business and politics. I think almost all businesses have to pay them to run business, even the folks who work at the dump picking thru scraps, sounds crazy but true. I do not think Trump is thinking of military intervention, but economic pressure, like he did with Turkey.

Also the wall/fence would be a great way to cut back on the Cartel’s profits, eventually starving them out, which would benefit the locals.
It might sound crazy, but in San Luis area the Cartel kind of holds back the gang crime, because they want the business to come across the border.
The gangs are a big problem, some are very clever and know how to get into bank accounts if they get personal info.
I have also been told that a great amount of drug money laundering goes on down where I stay because of all the exchange of dollars to peso’s I guess.

The gossip was that the Americans who were killed had been having a feud with the cartel for many years, not a good idea for a foreigner, not yet anyway.
But I am sure Trump will come up with an ingenious way to deal with this matter.

Time to start placing their foreign aid into a trust for compensation to victims of their negligence.

I would send the Mexican president a copy of his picture taken through the sights of a Predator drone, along with a note on US Presidential stationary that says Kiss My A$$.

The only thing i would support is a limited operation to take out cartel leadership like el Chapo. We hit them hard and then we go home. No need to get stuck in that quagmire

Of course they shouldn’t permit it. They are just as sovereign a nation as we are.

On the other hand, we can and should protect our border to the death from the savage messes called Mexican drug cartels, and all illegal aliens.

Deport and monitor the border as if it was an emerging industry!
