Mexico warns will not allow US military operations against cartels

Mexico's President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador warned Friday he would not allow the US to conduct cross-border armed operations, after Donald Trump vowed to designate Mexican drug cartels as terrorist groups.

The US president has been talking tough on the powerful drug cartels since one was allegedly responsible for the massacre of nine women and children from a US-Mexican Mormon community in northern Mexico on November 4.

Trump tweeted after the killings that the US was ready to help Mexico "wage war on the drug cartels," and he followed up this week by vowing to add Mexican cartels to the US blacklist of Foreign Terrorist Organizations.

That insulted national pride in Mexico, which resents a long history of armed interventions by its giant northern neighbor, and where Trump's comments have been taken as a threat of armed cross-border operations.

"Armed foreigners cannot intervene in our territory. We will not allow that," Lopez Obrador said.

He was quick to add that he considered any such operations unlikely, saying there was "great cooperation" between the neighbors and that Trump had always treated him "respectfully."

"In the unlikely case that a decision is taken that we consider affects our sovereignty, then we will act within the framework of international law, but I see it as unlikely," said the leftist leader, who took office one year ago.

US Attorney General William Barr will visit Mexico City next week for talks, said Mexican Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard.

Lopez Obrador, for his part, is due to meet Monday with family members of the slain Mormons.

Time to use Snipers against anything that walks or crawls on our borders that is carrying a gun or is wearing a mask.

Then leave the bodies where they’ve fallen.

I’m a bit testy on illegals and drugs.

As you can see there is very little that is actually under Outthedoor's control. So as long as those areas in central Mexico are avoided the rest is fair game.

I think when fedgov started that whole “War on Terror” thing, that was us deciding “We don’t need no stinkin badges”. Hence the effort to designate the cartels as terrorists.

“Proof that Mexico IS a Narco-State, time to declare war on them and clean it up...”

I’m going to disagree. No Mexican president (whether under the influence of the cartels or not) could say any different. It would be political suicide in Mexico (or perhaps even actual suicide). Mexicans for many reasons rightly or wrongly resent the United States. As president Diaz said 100 years ago, “Poor Mexico, so far from God and so close to the United States.”

Mexico is and has been since its independence a mess. I was watching a feature on Mexican TV about the 11 worst Mexicans in all of history. Most were presidents, or rulers with other titles.

Congress is never going to declare war against anybody ever again. The last time Congress did was against Hungary, Bulgaria and Romania in 1942.

But we can put pressure on the Mexican government. Closing the border every now and then will concentrate minds. The wall is helping. And perhaps we can clandestinely make sure that certain Narco leaders meet untimely demises.

Maybe just declare war on Mexico then. Their military is a joke so the real battle would be with cartels.

That confirms the Mexican president is controlled by the cartels.

Hi. Hope you are doing well.

We (The U.S. and Texas) beat the Mexican army twice. Each time we didn’t rule them or try nation building.

Build the wall. Enforce the border. The Mexican government will either fall or eliminate the corruption from the cartels.

Imho.

The Mexican federalies and military aren’t doing so well against the cartels now. What makes them think they could stop USMIL?

Wow. Those five women are..... quite lovely. Don’t really look “Latina” though. Could be next door.

In ten years the girl will probably be trouble just like mom and sisters. Gonna have daddy wrapped around little finger though, if she doesn’t already.

That works when you are shooting unarmed porcupines.

These cartel bastards have private armies.

You are right.

That's why the bounty has to be in the millions, not 50 cents, as we got.

First that would give competing cartels more incentive to kill their rivals.

Then mercenary types could finish off what's left.

Not surprising one bit when one considers that most of Mexico’s government is on a multitude of cartel payrolls..........................................
