The self-described last Republican on the Upper West Side will join family for Thanksgiving dinner and arrive fully armored.
Well, I hope to have a good time, Suzanne Pederson said of the annual family celebration, but I probably wont.
This will be the nations fourth Thanksgiving since Donald Trump was elected president and the first since the Democrats perpetually simmering effort to impeach him fanned into flame. That development has some professionals cautioning that even a perfectly cooked turkey and stuffing can be ruined by a political fight at the table.
Knowing few Manhattan lairs are welcome to President Trumps supporters, Ms. Pederson said, she has no intention of mentioning the presidents name or policies, but as a guest of devout Democrats, she expects political topics to arise anyway.
The thing I hate the most is being baited and falling for it, she said. When they sidle up and say, Help me understand what appeals to you about him, when you know youre on the Upper West Side and theyre not listening to a word I say.

Go vegan with a tasty roasted Tofurkey, label a spare bedroom Safe Space, have the house temp at a very energy-saving level, play coffee house music, watch GreenPeace videos, do a yoga sequence, end with candlelight chanting and send all on their way in peace. Really confuse them.
If I went to a gathering like that I’d need two hip flasks. One filled with Jack Daniels and other with Maalox.
Forest Ranch, just North of Chico.
Don’t go. Just think what crazed lefties might do to your food; not to mention the stress of family combat.
Fortunately the friends we are breaking bread with here in a little while are just as conservative as us, possibly more so.
How about, “Trump, and I, recognizes the legitimacy of the Constitution. You do not.”?
I hate to break it to you, but to those of us up here, the South Bay area isn’t considered Nor Cal.
Anyone at my Thanksgiving table that mentions our President in vain shall find a drumstick stuck where the sun doesn’t shine.
Dont forget to bring the wine
Me too. Anybody who starts talking politics at the family Thanksgiving dinner should be black listed and never invited back. Family shmamily, I don’t care who they are, do not invite them next year or if they are invited then you should not go.
‘The hatred now is just unbelievable’
Correction- it’s Satanic!
The thing I hate the most is being baited and falling for it, she said. When they sidle up and say, Help me understand what appeals to you about him, when you know youre on the Upper West Side and theyre not listening to a word I say.
Simple answer to that is, I dont need to justify myself to you.
My point was for a conservative to play their game back at them, in spades.
Im in the kitchen with my reasonable liberal brother in law. My husband is in the living room with the rabid liberal brother. Its really quiet out there.
Turkeys starting to smell good, though!
Tell yourself they are brainwashed. And stay closeted and have a good time. We are the only group the left still wants in the closet. Too bad Im not a questioning bitransbestial - then I cold be open about my differences.
For 40 years I’ve argued that very point. We are actually MidCal. But it’s hopeless. So, no, you aren’t breaking it to me at all.
[some random rambling opening salvo about Trump or impeachment]
“Yes, he’s doing an awesome job as president. It must frustrate Democrats to no end that he’s able to accomplish so much.”
[shocked almost angry response of some kind]
“Indeed, you’re correct, we should again give thanks this year that the country as a whole chose to elect him rather than Hillary in violation of the constitutional ban on more than two terms. I’m pretty sure there’s not a single person who voted for the 22nd Amendment who’d agree with a spousal bypass.”
[even more shocked and angry response]
“You do notice that you’re the only one here, out of everyone, who is taking this stance, right? That no one is even now speaking up about this? That you’re actually alone in your love of usurping the lawfully elected president via a congressional coup? That everyone else here has accepted (or cheered) the election results and moved on rather than acting like sore losers?”
[thrown napkin, huffy words, slam of the front door]
“Whew, guess we’re all off the hook from eating that awful thing she calls apple strudel.”
[lots of general laughter and we move on with our Thanksgiving, finishing the prayer she objected to in the first place...]
Admittedly, I used to consider anything from Monterey and Fresno and northward to be NorCal. But I’m ready to draw the line north of Sacramento.
Stay home. I’m estranged from severe TDS relatives for other reasons let alone politics
