Todays sign of the apocalypse: Tampons Are Coming to the Mens Room at Brown University.
The student body president at Brown University, Viet Nguyen, will personally be handing out free tampons and pads in mens, womens, and gender neutral restrooms on campus, Newsweek reported Tuesday.
We wanted to set a tone of trans-inclusivity, and not forget that theyre an important part of the population, Nguyen explained in an email announcing his bathroom project.
An important part of the population? No doubt every individual is important, but as far as I know, I have never met a trans person. Have you? But the fact that trans people, however defined, represent an infinitesimal percentage of the population isnt the main point here.
Id be naïve to say there wont be push back. Ive had questions about why were implementing this in male bathrooms as well. Its an initial confusion, but people generally understand when we explain it.
Please, explain it to me!
How do you explain it? Men can have periods, too.
No, actually, men dont have periods. Theyre men. You can be a person who has periods and call yourself a man, but calling yourself a man doesnt make you one. (Abraham Lincolns story of the dogs legs comes to mind.) If you need a tampon, the proper place to look is the womens rest room.
How on Earth does nonsense like this gain currency? I suppose one answer is that a lot of nonsense is gaining currency these days, especially in our allegedly elite institutions. Steve noted that yesterdays Harvard-Yale football game was delayed for over an hour because student protesters occupied the field during halftime to stage a climate protest. Rather than clearing these goofs off the field, the authorities humored them and delayed the second half.

"Viet Nguyen is a 2017 Brown graduate. Nguyen came to Brown with interests in neuroscience and computer science; ultimately, his commitment to educational equity for students from all backgrounds led him to concentrate in education studies. As a student, Nguyen wrote the proposal that led to the creation of the First Generation and Low-Income Student Center. His senior year, he was elected president of the student body and led successful efforts to eliminate application fees for low-income and first-generation applicants and to mandate sexual assault prevention training for all student groups on campus. He received a Joslin Award for his contributions to the quality of student life and served as a senior orator at Brown's 2017 Commencement. He currently serves as the co-founder and executive director of EdMobilizer, a nonprofit that promotes nationwide policy reform to benefit low-income and first-generation college students, for which he was named one of Forbes 30 under 30 in education. He is a Fulbright scholar and will be enrolling at Stanford for an MBA in the fall."
I'd wager his Mom & Dad were refugees from Viet Nam and are real proud of him for saying "Men get periods."
Very weird that his bio stresses he came to Brown with interests in neuroscience and computer science, but "ultimately, his commitment to educational equity for students from all backgrounds led him to concentrate in education studies." How many people write a bio "I was REALLY interested in neurology or nuclear engineering, but decided to become a teacher instead"? In other words, he's a lightweight who couldn't hack the rigor of the touch classes.
Any resume crossing my desk where the applicant is from an Ivy will be immediately and summarily rejected.

Nguyen failed his science courses.
No doubt about that. But most people would be ashamed by that and never mention their aspiration to be a neuroscientist or computer scientist again. The kid has no shame! To what end would he announce interests in areas he couldn't hack?
Then became a community organizer.
As someone who graduated from Cornell almost 30 years ago, I’d largely agree with you.
That said, this is Brown, which that far back already had a reputation for being plain nuts.
AOC went to BOSTON UnIVERSITY... ANOTHER OVER RATED WASTE OF REAL ESTATE
She went to BU........Boston University.....not Brown
Is your McDonalds a franchise or company store?
That’s what I posted!
I’m agreeing with you....
Oh, sorry; THANKS!
Sort of like the Reformation; and yet the parent church had the wealth and property to soldier on for 502 years and counting...
Judging by the photo, I'd say "he" was a she when she entered, found out about the free sex-change offered by Student Health, and everything else went out the window from that point on, including her interest in actual science. Just a guess.
“Charlie don’t Menstruate!”
Let’s see..Mr. Nguyen, your parents (if they are American) escaped Asia (most likely Vietnam), so why not go and visit your Homeland and try to put tampons in the men’s room there. They might throw you in a mental ward for being bad for society and the nation.
Engineering department head.
I will not hire anyone who thinks that logic and reason is white cishetoro patriarchy.
I think you have to subdivide the Ivy League into Jr and Sr:
Sr. is Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Columbia
Jr. are Cornell and UPenn,
Brown and Dartmouth are in the middle.
I would suggest that some non-Ivy League schools have more stature than some Ivy League schools (Stamford, MIT, maybe U of Chicago), especially in certain areas. Brown, for instance doesn’t have a law school.
Just cut off the government funding.
