Trump considering withdrawing up to 4,000 U.S. troops from South Korea

..."I understand that the U.S. is preparing to withdraw one brigade in case negotiations with South Korea do not go as well as President Trump wants," a diplomatic source in Washington with knowledge of the negotiations was cited as saying by South Korean newspaper Chosun Ilbo.

There are about 28,500 U.S. troops in South Korea. A brigade is about 3,000-4,000 troops, Chosun said, and a potential reduction would be within the bounds of the National Defence Authorization Act for fiscal year 2019, passed by the U.S. Congress.

None of the funds authorized by the act may be used to reduce the total number of U.S. military in South Korea below 22,000 unless the Secretary of Defense certifies the necessity to Congress committees...

Trump needs to find a way to get around Congress' usurpation of his powers as Commander in Chief and bring the rest home.

About time after the war has ended for some 65 years.

I want to bring troops home but Korea is a super dangerous situation. I would like to see a reciprocal move by the Norks first.

We could use those 4000 troops to defend our southern border.

Pres. Trump can legally reduce the troop level by about 6500 (28,500 - 22,000)

So he's still got another ~3000 troops he could withdraw ... that's further leverage in case SK doesn't want to bother to pay, despite SK doing pretty good under the US umbrella ...

The Art of the Threat ... always the counterpart to The Deal

Good. South Korea has had decades to find a solution or learn to defend themselves.

In an opening salvo thousands of US troops could die. It is better for us to have a small group in SK and back them up with the 7th fleet. NK also knows we have some Ohio Class submarines with Tridents onboard.

****************

Yep. Simultaneous withdraws.

Every time we take some of our troops home, the Norks take a similar number of their troops home.

Oh, wait...

Btw, you do realize SK has a rather large and capable military? And defense of their own land is their own responsibility?

What we have there is no more than “trip wire” numbers anyway.

Its not like we can’t tell if the Norks invade SK from CONUS what with there being TV, radio and those satellite gizmos.

And what would our troops in SK do if the Norks got froggy anyway? It takes us months to mount up any kind of real response short of nukes.

“I want to bring troops home but Korea is a super dangerous situation.”

Yeah, a total cut and run would have disastrous results.

“I would like to see a reciprocal move by the Norks first.”

Not sure how they could respond to a troop withdrawal - their soldiers are already on home turf.

I know that. We wouldn’t be in this mess if we had nuked the Chinese back across the Yalu river back in ‘50. The communists in our own ranks have been running interference for the Chicoms and Norks FOREVER.

It’s not about the Norks. Trump wants SK to pay, I think 5 billion, for the cost. They are refusing so Trump is threatening to pull the troops. Trump plays for keeps. No one should doubt he will do this. Congress is tries to tie his hands. Trump being Trump. He will get the defense Secretary to certify if he feels necessary or get rid of him Trump plays for keeps folks. Real hardball. The man the country needs as President

I understand. By reciprocal I mean something else. What that could be would have to be negotiated. Maybe signing a peace treaty? That’s a stretch but any move we make in de escalation has to be matched.

“Trump considering withdrawing up to 4,000 U.S. troops from South Korea...”

That’s okay..they are just there as a trip wire.
