Dean Foods, America's biggest milk processor, filed for bankruptcy Tuesday amid a steep, decades-long drop-off in U.S. milk consumption blamed on soda, juices and, more recently, nondairy substitutes.
The Dallas company said it may sell itself to the Dairy Farmers of America, a marketing cooperative owned by thousands of farmers.
"Despite our best efforts to make our business more agile and cost-efficient, we continue to be impacted by a challenging operating environment marked by continuing declines in consumer milk consumption," CEO Eric Berigause said in a statement.
Since 1975, the amount of milk consumed per capita in America has tumbled more than 40%, a slide attributed to a number of reasons but mostly the rise of so many other choices, including teas, sodas, juices and almond and soy milk.

re: “They call it milk because no one in marketing wanted to sell nut juice.”
Milk - both a noun AND a verb ...
re: “price controls.”
My mind’s eye read that as “gouge controls.”
Other than that it’s fairly inexpensive.
Wow, I look just like that milkman...
If this is true, then why is milk so expensive?................
Government!!!!
Milk is expensive because of a) government regulations, b) government regulations, and c) government regulations.
Milk is cheap overall. The regulation on milk is needed.
My family has been doing our part! Milk keeps getting more and more expensive. I’m seriously considering adding a few dairy sheep to my farm.
LOL! Wiping up the spewed milk.
I wonder if Dean Foods were unionized? A quick internet search shows their drivers appear to be. I remember years ago when Hostess went under it was because of the inflexibility of their union drivers. A real case of the “tail wagging the dog.”
Yep! They already are saying they screwed themselves by not unionizing. Ugh!
???
Homogenized and pasteurized is ‘over processinized’?
Yes.
Perfect
re: “Whole milk is $1.59 @ gallon at Wegmans ....all day, everyday.”
We pay $1.59 a HALF gallon for Kroger brand at Kroger near Dallas. A sale bring it down to $0.99
Perhaps a tangential cause that isn’t given much thought, 1970 being when the effects of Hart-Cellar began to be noticed, is the larger percentage of population stock that is genetically predisposed to lactose intolerance.
I believe the other major factor is that we do not eat as much cereal as we used to back in the 1970’s.
Therefore, we don’t consume as much milk.
North Central Florida milk is about $2.37/gal. at Walmart and $4/gal. at Publix. There’s a BP gas station near here that sells beer at a price comparable to the grocery stores, but T.G. Lee milk is $6/gal....
... and $3.25/gal at the DG directly across the street from the BP...
Divco milk truck photo....
Wow. Brings back memories. They were built a few miles away from my childhood home (suburb outside of Detroit). Drivers stood to drive and could hop in and out without a door.
Twin Pines milk deliveries to our area.
I still love to drink milk and eat yogurt.
I resent the people under 50 who do so much I dislike including abandoning milk products. And dvds, cds, printed books, printed magazines, and so much more. Oh-—and the American Way of Life and the American flag and our freedom.
