~The FReeper Canteen Presents~

Road Trip: U. S. Coast Guard Base Kodiak,  Alaska

AKkodiak1

Coast Guard Base Kodiak is a major shore installation of the United States Coast Guard, located in Kodiak, Alaska. The largest tenant unit on the base is Air Station Kodiak. It is also the home port for several cutters. Historic elements that it includes are the Kodiak Naval Operating Base, Fort Greely, and Fort Abercrombie.

AKkodiak5

On 17 April 1947 the Coast Guard Air Station was commissioned as an Air Detachment at the navy base with one PBY Catalina aircraft, seven pilots, and thirty crewmen.

On 25 April 1972 the order establishing Coast Guard Base Kodiak and CG RADSTA Kodiak was issued by the Commandant of the CG. CG Air Station Kodiak was already operating with three HC-130H airplanes and two HH-52A helicopters.

Today, CG Air Station Kodiak operates five HC-130H aircraft, five MH-60T Jayhawk helicopters, and five HH-65C Dolphin helicopters.

AKkodiak4

MH-65D helicopters augment Alaska Patrols (ALPAT) by deploying aboard 378’ High Endurance Cutters to make the United States Coast Guard presence known to the outer edges of the largest operational area of responsibility in the Coast Guard, over 3.9 million square miles.

AKkodiak3

In addition to Search and Rescue operations and Fisheries Law Enforcement patrols, the air station flies missions involving logistic support of outlying Coast Guard units as far as Barrow to the north and Shemya to the west.

They provide deployed helicopter SAR support out of Cordova from April through September and Cold Bay from October through December and January through March with additional seasonal FOLs in the northern region as needed. The air station personnel maintain relationships with and support of federal and state agencies throughout Alaska.

Our Blessings, His Love

Bible in a Year:

To him who led his people through the wilderness; His love endures forever. Psalm 136:16 In 2015, a woman discarded her deceased husband’s computer at a recycling center—a computer that had been made in 1976. But more important than when it had been made was who made it. It was one of 200 computers hand built by Apple founder Steve Jobs, and was worth an estimated quarter of a million dollars! Sometimes knowing the true worth of something means knowing who made it.

Knowing that it’s God who made us shows us how valuable we are to Him (Genesis 1:27). Psalm 136 catalogs key moments of His people—ancient Israel: how they had been freed from captivity in Egypt (vv. 11–12), journeyed through the wilderness (v. 16), and were given a new home in Canaan (vv. 21–22). But each time a moment of Israel’s history is mentioned, it’s paired with this repeated refrain: “His love endures forever.” This refrain reminded the people of Israel that their experiences weren’t random historical events. Each moment had been orchestrated by God and was a reflection of His enduring love for those He’d made.

Far too often, I allow moments that show God at work and His kind ways to simply pass by, failing to recognize that every perfect gift comes from my heavenly Father (James 1:17) who made me and loves me. May you and I learn to connect every blessing in our lives to God’s enduring love for us.

Reflect & Pray

How can we better remember the Source of life’s blessings? What hinders you from doing so?

Heavenly Father, please don’t allow even one blessing that You’ve given pass by without me recognizing that it came from You, and You alone!

Kathy, you are the only FReeper I personally “know” for lo these many years. I know we lost 2V this week and I wept accordingly.

This is directed at Kathy my long time FRiend but broadcast to all servicepeople — active, retired and allied.

All gave some, some gave all and those who wait also serve.

I give you, Kathy, and by extension all in our sphere the snappiest salute I, as a civvie, can do. Hand hard and sharp, index finger to the right eyebrow, and 100% love in my heart. God bless you all!

Zoo day at work or did going in yesterday give you a good enough head start to smooth things out?

Hi radu!

We have no real cold weather like the east and south are expected to have, just typical with nice afternoon warmth.

Was today the last day at the museum before they close for the year? Were you there?

Son and I had lunch today at Applebees, a lot of veterans there and the steak I had was wonderful! Applebees really does right for Veteran's Day!

Are you getting frigid weather now?
