Forget Greenland — Trump should offer statehood to these Canadian provinces
The Hill ^ | 11 02 2019 | Isaac Orr and Jason Hayes

President Trump’s offer to purchase Greenland from Denmark was front-page news in August, but a better option for expanding the country’s geographic footprint would be to offer statehood to the Canadian provinces of Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba, as well as the interior of British Columbia.

After the final results of the recent Canadian election, there’s likely a growing group of Western Canadians who might seriously consider that offer.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau just squeaked through the Canadian federal election with a minority government. So, with the help of the New Democratic Party, or NDP, and the Canadian Green Party, he still has the votes in Parliament to impose his carbon tax on the nation. That plan holds the power to cripple the economies of the Western provinces, all of which rely heavily on energy-intensive industries such as oil and natural gas, mining, forestry and agriculture.

With their livelihoods at stake, many Western Canadians may be wondering whether they even belong in Canada anymore. Their concerns are based in the West’s well-established distrust of Eastern politicians who claim the right to oversee the development and disposition of Western natural resources. This time, Western separatism comes with the handy hashtag, #Wexit.

Those Canadian provinces may be “conservative” when compared to other parts of Canada, but I am very skeptical that these Canadians would be voting conservative in the US.

Let them form their own country.

The reason why all the oil companies are pulling out is because they are concerned that Trueshit is going to nationalize the oil, whether outright seizure or taxing the assets at high rates or demanding increased transfer payments.

Albertans would be voting very conservative.

We would be landlocked with a country that would demand impossible to pay treaties.

While speculating on the new North American order, New England should be ceded to Canada in trade for New America assembled from the middle formed Canadian provinces.

The “North East” is effectively European in politics and no longer really America

President Trump migrated away from the lost cause that is New York signaling to others what they should do

I don’t think Manitoba is particularly conservative - I thought they were pretty heavy NDP. Only Alberta may be conservative, but even that just may be oil related. Lots of Ontario people out in Alberta now, not unlike the Californians who move to Texas after the liberal policies they vote for destroy their states.

Include the Yukon and the Northwest Territories west of and including the Mackenzie to give us a land Bridge to Alaska.

In exchange give the Canadians the Lower Willamette Basin and the North Coast Basin of Oregon, and 10 coastal and near Coastal counties of California. If they want more, they can have Vermont.

I’m more generous than you. I’d give the Canadians everything east of the Hudson River. Including New York City.

You are absolutely correct. We’d just be bringing in more democrats, yes, even Alberta. They may be “conservative” by Canadian standards, but definitely by ours.

China would love to buy Greenland. Sometimes you need to buy the adjacent lot to keep the riffraff out.

You are of course correct

In my southern mind, New York is New England

I can also tell you that any western Canadian with half a brain would do well to stay away from any talk about joining the U.S.

The dirty little secret is that Canadian provinces have far more autonomy under their existing system than they would ever have as U.S. states. The Canadian government might be filled with dopey leftists, but they are nothing compared to the ruthless totalitarianism that dominates our Federal government.

I’ve lived on both sides of the border. I’ll take Ottawa over Washington under any circumstances.

Alberta’s oil is about to be nationalized. It is why every oil company in Alberta is getting out. It is what they believe is coming. It is why that bastard bought the pipeline, to make the arguement of giving Canadians their fair share because they invested in the oil sands.

I will take the US and be a state any day.
