The American Dream entertainment and shopping complex is opening its doors to the public on Friday, more than two decades after it was first conceived. Back then, the iPhone didn't exist, Amazon was only selling books online and malls were where you went for all your shopping needs.
Now, after endless fits and starts and billions of dollars spent, American Dream will become the second largest mall in the country, and third largest in North America. It will showcase 3 million square feet of leasable space dedicated to more than a dozen entertainment attractions like a 16-story indoor ski slope, rollercoaster, waterpark and eventually 450 retail, food and specialty shops.

Eastland...?
Chris Rock"Every town has the same two malls: the one where white people go to and one where white people used to go to."
I’ve heard the story of Landover Mall in the Washington DC area. That mall was in Prince George’s County, which was changing into a majority black suburban area near Washington. As time went on, the clientele of the mall changed, which in turn caused changes in the types of stores which were in that mall, which in turn drove away shoppers.
Eventually, things got so bad there that the mall was torn down. Even though, on paper, the surrounding areas had some relatively high income communities to theoretically draw customers from, the clientele of the mall killed it off.
The mall nearest me - Northgate Mall in north Seattle - is in a state of chaos. Three major stores - J.C Penney, Nordstrom’s, and Macy’s - have closed within the last six months. A California Pizza Kitchen closed, a RAM sports bar, a Panera restaurant, one other restaurant, and numerous other shops. It’s part of a renovation tied to the building of a light-rail system. The mall will probably survive, but in radically-altered form.
There’s something to be said for that, and you’re probably right. What sets this mall apart from many others is that it’s probably more of an “entertainment destination” than a shopping mall ... so many patrons will see a $24 parking charge as no different than a $24 charge to park for a major sports event.
No, Lakeside Mall
Link to Lakeside Malls future. Offices, housing, public areas. Maybe a complete land change. Much less shopping.

The Meadowlands? Man, that’s my old stomping grounds. Me and my pals used to go out along the Boonton Line RR of the old Eire Lackawana RR hunting muskrats with a.22 or a pellet gun and Cherry Bombs. Big suckers out there. And rats. Big ones. Of course that was a long time ago. Fifty years almost. It’s not like that anymore.
Yup. It’s like the movie “The Producers’’. Produce a monumental flop and rake in the dough as a write off.
According to the article this mall will charge customers to park - up to $24 for eight hours. They are out of their f’ing minds.
If anyone is interested in buying a lightly used indoor ski slope cheap check back in a month or two.
Retail is a terrible business and with Amazon even more so.
I’ve been and mind you I’m in Canada, but the during the week it is a ghost town.
Took a pricing course in b-school, early 1990s.
The prof said a friend of his from grad school took a teaching job and went to upgrade his wardrobe.
He bought ~$800 worth of clothes, and the Galleria mall store refused to validate his parking for some reason.
The guy cancelled his purchase right then and there for the want of consideration of $2.50 or $5 or whatever.
No. It will have people from New Jersey in it.
The last time I went to a mall, I was looking at the new Buick’s when two guys dressed in all black drove through in a beat up old police car being chased by some Illinois State Troopers.
Yep, they have ruined malls, movie theaters, places like Chuckie Cheese, IHOP, etc. Apparently some people believe they are entitled to break the law and behave in any manner they choose.
Add jihadists to the mix, and you have all the reasons you need to avoid malls. Plus, the no-carry signs all over the place have created the perfect spot for mass shootings.
Back in 1984 my wife was stationed at the Joint Staff and lived on Bolling AFB.
I was still stationed in Michigan and would drive to DC once per month to see her and we would go kill a Saturday shopping and one time stopped at the Landover Mall. It was already being overrun and there were lots of ferals sitting in the mall giving us stares as we walked around. Even back then the Sears store there was nearly empty due to the feral infestation.
Needless to say we never went there again and when I got stationed in DC in 1992 the Landover Mall was toast.
“I wouldn’t pay $24 to park there for eight months.”
cheapskate ... ;-)
Now they've moved to Pentagon City Mall
I retired from the Air Force, stayed in the DC area, and worked as a contractor for ten years. After I sold my company I vowed to never work up there again so I just took on jobs around my area south of DC.
The closest mall to us is the Spotsylvania Mall in Fredericksburg. I haven't been in the mall directly for at least three years (I do shop at the Costco on the one end). Several years ago they started a bus route that stopped at the mall and crime started to increase but the local police really cracked down and the mall had rules about youngsters so I think it isn't too bad. Even with that the last time I was there the mall was pretty empty.
