I’ve heard the story of Landover Mall in the Washington DC area. That mall was in Prince George’s County, which was changing into a majority black suburban area near Washington. As time went on, the clientele of the mall changed, which in turn caused changes in the types of stores which were in that mall, which in turn drove away shoppers.
Eventually, things got so bad there that the mall was torn down. Even though, on paper, the surrounding areas had some relatively high income communities to theoretically draw customers from, the clientele of the mall killed it off.
Back in 1984 my wife was stationed at the Joint Staff and lived on Bolling AFB.
I was still stationed in Michigan and would drive to DC once per month to see her and we would go kill a Saturday shopping and one time stopped at the Landover Mall. It was already being overrun and there were lots of ferals sitting in the mall giving us stares as we walked around. Even back then the Sears store there was nearly empty due to the feral infestation.
Needless to say we never went there again and when I got stationed in DC in 1992 the Landover Mall was toast.
