Long-delayed American Dream mall is opening, but will shoppers come? [Meadlowlands NJ]
CBS News ^ | October 25, 2019 | Staff

The American Dream entertainment and shopping complex is opening its doors to the public on Friday, more than two decades after it was first conceived. Back then, the iPhone didn't exist, Amazon was only selling books online and malls were where you went for all your shopping needs.

Now, after endless fits and starts and billions of dollars spent, American Dream will become the second largest mall in the country, and third largest in North America. It will showcase 3 million square feet of leasable space dedicated to more than a dozen entertainment attractions like a 16-story indoor ski slope, rollercoaster, waterpark and eventually 450 retail, food and specialty shops.

It’ll go the way of Nordstrom’s in Manhattan.

Hard to even find a mall still open around here.

The big MetroCentre Mall in Phoenix (featured in "Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure") is still open. Of course, half the stores are unoccupied, and half the building is U-Haul self-storage. But it's open.

> If they add bus routes to and from the mall and import teens from the hoods - why, I predict it will be a great success. <

There is - or should I say was - a beautiful mall about 15 miles away from me. Then someone got the bright idea to put a city bus stop at one of the front doors.

Fast forward one year. A local cop advised me to stay away from that mall on Friday and Saturday evenings.

Fast forward four more years. That mall is now an empty shell.

And that’s a damn shame. That bus line gave poor city folks the opportunity to shop and eat somewhere nice. But it also gave thugs and hoodlums a place to go to steal things, and raise hell.

$24 for 8hr of parking, but buses will go to the ghettos far and wide to make sure the Mall has plenty of diversity for you to enjoy.

“We’ve had this problem in NJ for years. Over the years, malls like Garden State Plaza have been running straight shot bus routes from the PA in NYC as well as the bus terminal at the GWB”

according to the article, the “Dream Mall” will be doing the same thing ...

Thanks for that detail.

I wouldn't pay $24 to park there for eight months. LOL.

The cure for many urban ills is to NEVER vote for any form of public transportation of any kind!

All public transport does is bring the ghetto to your front door!

In many cases, mass transit connections aren't intended to bring customers to these malls. They're intended to bring workers to these places.

Every time a retail store closes, a distribution center gets its wings.

My company builds the trucks that move products from First Mile to Final Mile (delivery to your door)

In Austin, TX the mall wanted to shut down during the high school state UIL track and field competitions held nearby every year because of the imported little thugs running wild at the mall between events. Lib city leaders said they couldn’t close the mall. Privately owned mall and stores but they had to follow the city’s ruling.

Then it’s back to online shopping.

I live about 2 miles away from a giant mall that I haven't stepped foot in in at least 10 years........Everything I order is online.

In it's time, it was the premier mall in the metro Detroit area. Now there are plans to shut it down and sell it off.

I imagine the parking charge is designed to keep out a lot of the riff raff.
Same here with the beaches in MA...i have ZERO problem paying the parking rate.
