9 GOP Senators Refuse to Condemn House Impeachment
The Hill ^ | October 24, 2019

Posted on 10/25/2019 2:13:00 AM PDT by Helicondelta

Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) is spearheading the resolution, which is backed by 44 GOP senators including Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.).

Graham, during a press conference with reporters, lashed out the House impeachment inquiry calling it a "secret proceeding" and a "rogue action" that "denies due process."

"The process in the House today I think is a danger to the future of the presidency," Graham told reporters.

He argued that under the current procedure Trump was "pretty much shut out," adding "God help future presidents."

The GOP senators not cosponsoring the resolution as of Thursday afternoon, according to a list from Graham's office, are: Sens. Mitt Romney (R-Utah), Susan Collins (R-Maine), Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska), Cory Gardner (R-Colo.), Lamar Alexander (R-Tenn.), Mike Enzi (R-Wyo.), Johnny Isakson (R-Ga.), Dan Sullivan (R-Alaska) and Rob Portman (R-Ohio).

It could be something else which rhymes and starts with Sh . . . But I prefer to use the polite term, “A skid mark on the undershorts of the deep state.”

I would argue that impeachment did hurt Bill Clinton. But the main impact of impeachment is long term. Years from now the only thing Clinton and Trump will be remembered for is that they were both impeached.

Except Trump will go down in history as the only man every to be elected after being impeached. And a landslide too!

Portman won re-election in 2016 and would be up for re-election in 2022.

Scroll to the bottom of this page for info on local phone # and office locations. DC, Cleveland, Cincinnati, Toledo, & Columbus.

https://www.portman.senate.gov/

Rob Portman info:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rob_Portman

Portman graduated from U of M law school in 1984 and by 1989 had been appointed associate White House Counsel under President George H. W. Bush.

From 1989 to 1991, Portman served as George H. W. Bush’s deputy assistant and director of the White House Office of Legislative Affairs.

In 1993, Portman entered a special election to fill the seat of Congressman Bill Gradison of Ohio’s second congressional district, .... Portman was re-elected in 1994, 1996, 1998, 2000, 2002, and 2004, defeating Democrats Les Mann,[29] Thomas R. Chandler,[30] and then Waynesville mayor Charles W. Sanders four times in a row

Then there were the White House appointments: 2005–2007 [which included US Trade Representative, Hong Kong Trade Suit, and OMB]

In 2007, he joined a law firm....and in 2010 won a senate seat election and was re-elected in 2016.

The GOP senators not cosponsoring the resolution as of Thursday afternoon, according to a list from Graham's office, are: Sens. Mitt Romney (R-Utah), Susan Collins (R-Maine), Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska), Cory Gardner (R-Colo.), Lamar Alexander (R-Tenn.), Mike Enzi (R-Wyo.), Johnny Isakson (R-Ga.), Dan Sullivan (R-Alaska) and Rob Portman (R-Ohio).

This comes close to matching another reporter than 10 Republican senators were willing to vote for removal from office. But let's look at this list a little closer:

1) Romney - needs no explanation. He's the Judas Iscariot of the Republican Party, having taken that role from John McCain.

2) Collins - Pro-abort RINO who is almost always on board with blocking anything conservatives want.

3) Murkowski - Ditto.

4) Gardner - Up for re-election in what has become a very blue state. I can understand if he doesn't want to tip his hand until necessary.

5) Alexander - Retiring RINO who, frankly, has little motivation to be beholden to Trump.

6) Enzi - No idea why he's not on board.

7) Isakson - Up for re-election in what is turning into a purple state. May have similar reasons to Gardner.

8) Sullivan - I know nothing about him.

9) Portman - A squishy.

There's good news and bad news here. If 40+ are willing to sign onto this resolution which has no force of law, there's like 40+ votes against removal which means removal from office is doomed.

The bad news is that there is enough Republicans that, if a vote were held, the Dems could claim there is "bipartisan support" for impeaching Trump.

There could be some movement from this list in either direction but, I am guessing if it came right down to removal from office, only Romney and less than five others would actually shoot their party in the head with the crazy notion of removing a Republican president from office without any crime committed. If they did, I would hope enough Republicans in their states would be outraged enough to remove them from office.

All these senators should remember that 90+ percent of Republicans are against impeachment and *these* are the senator's voting base. Any vote to remove Trump could be their political deathknell.

6 are up for re-election in 2020. Perfect timing for getting rid of them.

Misleading: Isakson is very ill (Parkinson’s) which is why he isn’t running again. He is a solid Trumper and would never vote against Trump.

Gardner is a Trump acquit, but he’s in a purple turning blue state and must appear “aloof.” I have indirectly from his campaign that there is no way he’d vote against Trump.

Really you’re looking at Minion, Murcowski, and Tom Collins as possible convicts, and even then, highly unlikely any of those would so vote. It would end their political careers.

Even now, Minion is seeing his approval crash in UT, and I’m told that people up there are furious. The “Pierre Delicto” stuff hurts even worse. So I think even Minion will vote acquit, meaning the Dems won’t have one GOPer.

More, I even think Yertle is within 1-2 votes of having an outright dismissal if an impeachment ever comes to the senate (takes 50). He has about 47 now.

These 9 should all be considered as votes to convict when it gets to the Senate.

Doesn’t matter. Need a super majority in the US Senate and the co authors of the resolution are enough to indicate the Impeachment Fascist group doesn’t have enough votes.

Nope. Number of co signers of the Resolution indicate they do not have the needed vote in the US Senate. This sham impeachment is dead. GOP called the Democrats bluff. Now they are going to have to vote in the US House or it DOA in the US Seante

If you support the rule of law, you should stop posturing on phony “principals” and demand the US House Democrats either conduct a proper Impeachment Process where testimony and cross examination take place IN THE OPEN, or they should shut down this Fascist farce today.

I love how the gutless GOP-E drones always want OUR side to disarm itself and place nice with the Demcorart Facist Party.

THEY DON”T PLAY BY YOUR POMPOUS POSTURING about “principals” and that is why “Conservative Inc” has been the most ineffective political movement in US History

If the Articles of Impeachment reach the Senate, the impeachment would be successful. Whether he is convicted or acquitted is a new ball game. All the House can do is impeach. That is why America's beloved muslim stated,"We are going to impeach......"

In closing and on a personal note, I hope that she cuts the heads off every non muslim that voted for her.

Nope because to actually impeach it all has to be made public in a trial. So the House Democrats are staging a political PR stunt right now. The Senate GOP just called their bluff. They either have to go for a real impeachment or go home.
