Kabul (AFP) — European Union officials called Sunday for a ceasefire in Afghanistan, saying the breakdown in talks between the US and the Taliban presented an opportunity to push anew for a truce.

US President Donald Trump last month declared talks with the insurgents “dead”, citing a Taliban attack that killed a US soldier.

Negotiations had been in the final stages for a deal that would have seen the US pull troops from Afghanistan after 18 years in return for various Taliban guarantees.

The Taliban look as Truces as a good deal...it gives them time to pull in new supplies and regroup. We’ve been through Muslim Truces before.

Perfect. We need more pieces in order to play chess. I don’t see an easy way to extricate with just two pieces.

Right. The US has been calling for a cease-fire for years. The Taliban disagree, but I’m sure they’ll listen to the UN. /s .

The EU is fond of calling for things that other people have to accomplish.

The Taliban controls more of the country than we do. The enemy knows we want to leave. We’re negotiating with them on how to leave trying to extract promises.

It’s a laughable negotiating position. They know we have to have the deal, and they can get along just fine without one. They know we’re afraid to really wipe them out. And they know we’re desperate to leave. They know we’re absolute pussies compared to the Soviets as far as how violent were willing to be. It’s laughable to think they have the slightest incentive to do anything to accommodate our desire to leave

Yeah, pretty tired of our guys with their hands tied being hurt and killed. I’m certainly not a dove but this has gone on WAY too long. Time to GTFO if we’re not gonna finish it as it should be. But thousands of years of living like that ain’t easy to correct. And, should we?

The EU is married to the UN.
They can’t have “crusaders/ infidels” in there stirring the pot.

The Donald was wrong to engage in talks with the Taliban, as merely U.S.-Taliban talks, excluding the government of Afghanistan.

We have commitments to the people and government of Afghanistan, that the Taliban assumed we dould ignore, or compromise, if the government of Afghanistan was excluded from the talks. In essence the Taliban thought we would make a “separate peace” with the Taliban, just to say we made a “peace agreement” and get out. They had good precedents to go on - like the separate peace Nixon made with North Vietnam.

From my view it is mostly the government of Afghanistan with whom the Taliban have to negotiate, or else U.S.-Taliban talks are doomed to present an ultimate failure that will not result in “peace”. They will either result in a Taliban take over, or continued war conducted by the Taliban against everyone else in Afghanistan.

If the government of Afghanistan can negotiate a peace agreement with the Taliban, it cannot be said to be an agreement engineered by U.S. interests, and the end results cannot be said to be a result of U.S. diplomacy, even if things revert back to war again.

The “EU”? They are non-players, by choice.

Now come on guys. I think this is a great idea. I think the EU should send in as many army units as they believe necessary so we can bring our boys home!

If they need more units than they already have, I am sure the French can come up a a few extra because they are so strong they don’t need NATO, right?

“Hmmmm. I seem to recall some resupply, uh I mean cease fire opportunities during the VN troubles too.”

Kind of makes you think there’s something going on behind the scenes doesn’t it.

The EU has no role to play in military discussions.

France, the UK, Poland, etc. who contributed to the Afghanistan effort should talk.

Better yet, hand it over to the Indians.
