Gov. Gavin Newsom signed the legislation on Sunday, prohibiting middle schools from starting class before 8 a.m. and high schools no earlier than 8:30 a.m.
"The science shows that teenage students who start their day later increase their academic performance, attendance and overall health," Newsom said in a statement. "Importantly, the law allows three years for schools and school districts to plan and implement these changes."

Well thats it. Thats her platform to run for office so now its just a matter of time.
Bad plan. Go to bed earlier instead.
Science again.
I was thinking the same thing. I rode my bike to school before the sun was up for workouts.
That is not the way middle schoolers are wired. Their circadian rhythms are jumbled, just like a lot of other things going on in their bodies during this transition time (from childhood to young adults). They are wired to naturally fall asleep around 10PM - 12 midnight, and rise nine to ten hours later. Their brains start processing information an hour or so after rising.
Then, around age 16, things start settling down again, and the early to bed, early to rise adage holds true.
IMO, homeschooling during the middle years, when a family can adapt to the needs of the individual, is the best plan. I would rather not fight a battle over a self-limiting condition.
Why is this even in the domain of legislation?
It effectively eliminates any extracurricular activities, except maybe for Midnight Basketball.
Who knew Jackson Public Schools were ahead of the curve back in the day?!?!!! I think out junior high started at 8:15am and high school at 8:45. My children have had varying start times in the places weve lived. They have had to be at the bus stop by 5:45am or as late as 7am. Thankfully, the 5:45am riders were happy to go to school, or that would have been a struggle. One of my teens in those years started going hunting with friends before school. They would be gone by 4am. That son became a Marine. :-)
Were not were. Auto correct is such a pain.
School starts later, the kids will stay up later. Same amount of sleep.
One of my grandsons starts school at 7:15. His school has had those hours forever. I used to sub there and had to be at the school by 7. On the positive side, they get out at 2:15.
Horse cookies, kids can’t go to sleep because they do nothing but play video games, text or look at memes. It may seem like it is not possible, but in Middle school when I was there, my parents had me going to bed by 8:30 and we went to sleep within a half hour. Up at 7, walk the 20 minutes to school on regular days. Or on basketball mornings, would leave at 6, walk to school, play a shortened game, then classes, then a PE class. After school, basketball, or baseball, or riding bikes. Football without helmets.
I see kids now, they only thing they exercise is their jaws. Either talking, or eating. Judging by the shape they are in, mostly eating. School would be better served having a boot camp with mandatory attendance. Get the kids in early, and work them out for an hour before every day. They will learn then, and not how to sleep in and be a schlub.
These people abhor liberty.
Adults who occupy space in classrooms now don’t have to get up so early
In 1972 our sophomore basketball team had practice at 7:00 AM. The gym was cold and the basketballs felt like rocks but it didnt kill us.
The science shows that people who go to sleep at a reasonable time and get up early are brighter and more successful.
Saw a stat the other day. Don’t remember if it was California or just our county but....hey we’ve improved our scores! 43.something percent of students are now proficient in English!
Just sad!
I’m glad it does not have a like button. That sort of thing is a lefty social media tool that can be manipulated a lot easier than a comment.
How about going to bed 30 minutes earlier?
Just what we need state power for.
Yeah. Let's teach laziness and sloth!
