If our NATO partner and ally by treaty Turkey is conducting genocide and war crimes...
by Jim Robinson

If our NATO partner and ally by treaty Turkey is conducting genocide and war crimes against the Kurds, then perhaps we should call on all our NATO partners and allies to condemn Turkey?

We are currently committed by treaty to defend TURKEY, NOT the Kurds.

We could tear up the treaties with Turkey and NATO and then enter into a mutual defense treaty with Kurdistan, but then what will Russia and Iran do? Oh, wait, there is no country named Kurdistan.

This is the way world wars are started.

Turkey should have been ejected from NATO in 1973 following the Conquest of Cyprus.

That we stayed in NATO when that didn’t happen is a terrible black stain upon the United States.

And that this:

remains is an ongoing blot.

The Kurds aren’t really better though, and if they can’t win their desired homeland through conquest then there is zero chance they could maintain one were it given to them. Its asking for endless war where we die as proxy for two sides that both hate free people.

If we are going to try to make anything better then let’s declare war and throw Turkey out of Cyprus first and see how that goes. Short of a declared war which would enable us to use enough force to get the job done, lets not throw lives away.

The Antifa groups on Twitter are all strongly supporting the Kurds right now.

“If our NATO partner and ally by treaty Turkey is conducting genocide and war crimes against the Kurds, then perhaps we should call on all our NATO partners and allies to condemn Turkey? “

They have. Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Norway and the U.K. have condemned Erodgan’s actions. Germany and France have halted arms sales to Turkey. Politicians in Denmark are demanding Denmark follow its Nordic friends in halting arms sales to Turkey. Spain is threatening to remove Spain’s NATO contingent from Turkey.

“We are currently committed by treaty to defend TURKEY”

Biggest mistake the west ever made. Turkey is like the Trojan Horse inside “the west”.

"Turkey has experience with that going back to Armenia."

The Kurds were glad to help the Ottoman Turks with the Armenian Genocide, it's not hard to find the details.

In the ME, more than most regions, it's always just a matter of how far back in history you want to go to find a time when folks you descend from did the same evil thing you're accusing others of.

Good points, all.

I believe that The United States should be very careful about Treaties and redefine them to remove terms like "allies" for "common interest" or "mutual interest".

Further, mutual military action agreements (like NATO) should be canceled.

That Foreigners are allowed a Bully On Call privilege is extremely detrimental to the United States.

“Credible back channels reporting that part of the Secret Iran Nuclear Deal was paying the Kurds to cover ISIS in Syria where a warehouse of Uranium One product is stored. “

Not one bit credible. That lies was created by some wacko conspiracy theories without any factual evidence. Most such theories are just like the media. An innuendo is enough proof.

Great! Hope we can count on them to follow through.

But if future military action on behalf of the Kurds is warranted, who pays for it and whose blood gets shed?

Iranian uranium ore product ain't squat, credible back channels report that the Kurds have and have deployed nuclear hand grenades.

They're taking CQB to a whole new level.

I could take issue with that statement, but I won't as I know nothing about you or your credentials.

Most likely another Keyboard Commando, sitting anonymously in the dark safety of his basement.

Go ahead and take the last shot "Bro" as I will regret even having posted this response in about 4, 3, 2, ....

I greatly respect the wisdom in this Sir. The problem is stereotyping. We have either lumped all kurds into either good or bad in perspective, when the reality is there are both good and bad tribes. When we defend the good tribes we are also defending the bad tribes who would stab us in the back in a heartbeat. The bad tribes are just using us as a useful financial and logistical tool hidden among the good.

A remnant of Cold War politics when Turkey was a western, secular nation that was a needed bulwark against easy Soviet expansionism. Didnt hurt that Russo-Turkish historical animosity put some firmness in that move to have them in NATO.

“Watching news reports of this situation in Syria, most Americans probably don’t even know that Turkey is a member of NATO, and wouldn’t have a clue explaining going to war against an ally, and how that might push Turkey into the arms of the Russians”

Stupid nonsense. Turkey needs no push from us. Erdogan is already buying SAM-400 missile systems from Putin.

“The MSM describe the Kurds as our “allies,” but they are so only in an informal, ad hoc sense (fighting ISIS), whereas Turkey is a formal ally by treaty.”

And who were we fighting in Syria with the Kurds? ISIS. And who helped ISIS in Syria? Erdogan. So who is the ally, and who is not??

Where did ISIS and Al Queda refugees in Syria get to when they could? They went to the northwest corner of Syria controlled by Erdogan where Erdogan formed them into gangs to take over Afrin and the area around Afrin. Erdogan, an “ally of ours”? On paper and only on paper.

"Was just talking about the Turks."

The Turkish Kurds don't count? Far fewer than half of the Kurds born in and living in Turkey want an independent State so, are they Turks or Kurds in your eyes?

For Kurds in Syria, a Conflict Renewed Wall Street Journal

Antifa specifically endorses the YPG. This, from the article, may explain:

The Kurdish leadership in Syria has also angered those Syrian Kurds who want self-determination but don’t agree with the YPG’s Marxist ideology and grip on power in Kurdish areas.
