Good riddance: The last gasp of Baby Boomer politics
The Hill ^ | 10/13/19 | Joe Ferullo

Posted on 10/13/2019 8:51:10 AM PDT by yesthatjallen

The pitched battle over impeachment is the last-gasp struggle of a generation that has dominated American politics, media and culture for more than half a century — the Baby Boomers.

It couldn’t happen to a nicer bunch of people.

I say this as a member of that tribe (although one on the, ahem, younger end of the timeline), someone who’s lived through the endless political and cultural wars painted in stark black-and-white by a group that only sees life in terms of Us-vs.-Them. It’s a generation, convinced of its own importance, that refuses to leave the public stage: The president, the speaker of the House, and just about all the top-tier Democratic presidential candidates are Boomers, pushing aside anyone below the age of 70.

Along with politics, their influence over media has been profound, turning a once-sober news landscape into a wrestling arena filled with ideologically-driven commentary.

It began from a place anyone could understand. The 1960s presented young people with constant challenges to American ideals: attacks on civil rights, traumatic political assassinations, the war in Vietnam and government lies that allowed that war to continue. Out of that shock to the system emerged the “underground press.” This movement informed a generation that mainstream media couldn’t be trusted, journalistic objectivity was a farce, and factual truth was less important than a “deeper truth.”

Typical millennial, blame “baby boomers” for all that is wrong in the world. They have a serious hate for the older generation, we’re all racist nazi’s who need to die according to them .

That’s right. Trump, a baby boomer is arguably the greatest president in U.S. history. And in fact it was the baby boomers who put Trump over the top in the 2016 election.

There was a move in the mid 1980s called "The Big Chill."

It was considered a touchstone movie for Baby Boomers as the plot revolved around a group of Baby Boomers confronting middle age. That was when the phrase "30-something" started catching on.

The Boomers were a product of the thinking that has seen our elites taking a disastrous turn since immediately after WWII but I think you can draw the conclusion that the immature black and white thinking youth obsessed culture came about because somewhere, somewhen, a group of smart pants flannel clad individuals got together and “decided” that the future was all about mobility and breaking up the traditional extended family units. This resulted in a great lurch forward that will absolutely be our undoing if the communists get their way in using it as a lever to which they can apply pressure. If this is to end well, the Boomers need to step up. Scapegoating of this sort is unproductive as well as being a great example of the problems we face. It’s a way of failing to face problems by choosing to blame other people rather than finding solutions.

The military-industrial complex has been replaced by the medical-pharmaceutical “insurance” complex.

There is an immense amount of Boomer hate among the subsequent cohorts. Easy to understand, that first wave of Boomers contained a very vocal bunch of self absorbed, ignorant, arrogant people

The weird thing is, as far as I can tell, many of the young Boomer haters are ignorant, arrogant assholes very much in the style of the 1stWaveBoomers.

The military-industrial complex has been replaced ...

Just partly. The wars in the middle east were started to sell weapons.

I don't disagree with the general premise of the article, but there is a generation coming up that will be just as bad, and probably worse - the millenials.

Journalism and trust in journalists have suffered amid the gleeful partisan shouting now confused with actual news.
Define “actual news.” The trouble is that “actual news” as a category promotes socialism by denigrating society (often called, “the market”).

A hundred houses can be built with no notice by journalism. But let one house burn down, and it’s "Stop the Presses!” time. This illustrates that the public discourse is dominated by bad news, while the historic record of America is dominated by huge increases in the standard of living over the span of a couple of generations.

My parents weren’t poor - but “poor” people today have the standard of living my parents had - and better.

I've said for years that The Greatest Generation was truly great in all they did in the 40's and 50's, but they REALLY sucked at raising kids.

I am among the first of the Baby Boomers, graduating high school in 1964, and consider the subsequent generations becoming now the Snowflakes a product of the feeble attempt at maturity by the most popular and influential part of my generation. The country appears to be inexorably migrating to an ever-shallower end of the gene pool.

The Baby Boomer vision ignored those qualities which made the United States the Arsenal of Democracy. Their parents were the Greatest Generation, but too few looked to emulate the noble character traits that saw their parents through the Depression and WW II.

These same parents were responsible to the extent they applied the misguided teachings of Dr. Spock. His definition of common sense could not balance love and affection with standards for behavior, self-control, and respect. For too many parents, common sense meant providing every advantage they had missed. In the process of catering to children’s feelings and preferences, they raised defiant, narcissistic offspring who viewed gratification as a right. Rather than examples to emulate, parents were merely vending machines required to fulfill material desires during a time of unimagined plenty.

These Boomers grew up with an unprecedented focus on self. With them the divorce rate first exceeded the marriage rate, and there was first enacted a Federal Support Enforcement program to track deadbeat dads. Prior to the 60’s, syphilis and gonorrhea were the widely known venereal diseases, but the virulent strains exploded until only professionals could keep track. This generation achieved self-actualization through moral exhibitionism and militant self-absorption.

These Boomers adopted civil rights as their signature cause once the Civil Rights Act of 1964 became law and expressed a popular virtue. This law was enacted just as the first Boomers graduated from high school, and therefore provided them numerous opportunities to express costless compassion. The generations which achieved maturity in the 30’s, 40’s, and 50’s were those that triumphed for human rights against formidable opposition.

The Vietnam War gave the Baby Boomer generation a chance to sacrifice in a noble cause. Because here a small country (including ethnic Chinese, Catholic Vietnamese and others fleeing Communism), and newly free from colonial rule, sought United States help in establishing self-rule and the means of self-defense against a totalitarian neighbor (Tonkinese) bent on conquest. Instead many chose to distance themselves from those adult realities by calling this fight an immoral war, and thereby implying that they would be the first to volunteer for a moral war, which of course is an oxymoron.

The WW II veterans who were their fathers and grandfathers, related to these children through reticence or stories that service can only be a duty. Instead of recognizing their turn had come, the Woodstock children sought safety by choosing to regard the war as an unjust, barbaric imposition. Jane Fonda and John Kerry were there to affirm this delusion by leading the swarm which regarded those who served as lunatic, drug addicted, baby killing, fascist pigs. Through their popularity and self-veneration, they were able to subject those who did serve to a comprehensive negative mythology.

When the Woodstock generation obtained positions of power, they sought policies of moral diversity/perversity and material comfort to transform the country into just another Gulag of apostasy, greed, and dependency. As they look to retirement, Boomers demand continuation of unsustainable entitlements in a manner freeing them from financial worries, from any need to care for their neighbor, and from facing the specter of national bankruptcy.

Worse than their simple existence is that they begat through multi-generational psychological incest a legacy of ideologically mutant children and grandchildren. These Woodstock offspring have become popularly known as the “Snowflakes” of present times. These descendants are contra-educated to abhor the Constitution, the virtuous and valorous founding of our country, and classical liberal principles found in values of the Enlightenment. They are perpetual children; are without essential humanity; empty, ignorant, feckless, emotional, overactive, and under challenged.

It seems to me they suffer from SISD or Self-Induced Stress Disorder.

The worst generation in American history still refuses to grow up. https://spectator.org/278662-2/?utm_source=American+Spectator+Emails&utm_campaign=dc1d0007f3-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2017_03_15&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_797a38d487-dc1d0007f3-104520165

The greatest generation sacrificed everything to combat communism and fascism, only to have the worst generation squander it all away in support of these vile forms of government.
