Turkish jets struck a Kurdish base near the Iraq-Syria border late Monday night, the first grim fruits of President Trumps decision to order US forces out of the way a decision we fear Trump will come to regret.
Well grant that the president is delivering on a campaign promise here: Like most Americans, he doesnt want this nation serving as the worlds policeman; other countries should share more of the burden when it comes to both troops and money.
Or, as he tweeted Monday, it is time for us to get out of these ridiculous Endless Wars.
He has a point, big-picture but hes making a big mistake here. Leaving Syria puts multiple US interests at risk. Hes not putting an end to endless wars, hes planting the seeds for future ones.

Thank God we have smart people on FR. DD should sit in a class held by you for a few weeks.
The man has been filthy rich for a long time and knows how to wield $ as a weapon. He has lots of experience doing it. We are finally using our real might and Trump is showing us how to win without a single bullet. What DD misses is Illegals, Brunson, No more nuke tests, $23 trillion out of China, etc. Look at recent history. Trump doctrine at work. Not a shot fired and many were “Allies” who bent the knee. Economic warfare is gutterally less satisfying than big booms but so much more effective and you can wield it on foe and ally alike.
LOL! I think not.
You seem to think having only 25 soldiers with the Kurds is not something already phased down.
Where is your freaking head?
Pig Ebola: Natural. There is a vector that can be traced and it came from Africa and slowly spread through Asia. Because the Chinese farm hogs so intensively it went “Hog Wild” there infecting 3/4ths of the population.
Kinetic = Shooting war in my comment
I propose calling it “Wallet Warfare”
Look, you have to make a paradigm shift in thinking. Trump does not think like someone merely rich. He thinks like a billionaire. It aligns with the US position in the world perfectly. The US is now acting like a billionaire on the world stage. Could you send in muscle to break kneecaps? Sure. What other options are open to you? Oh, they work for one of your vendors. Wonder if they want a raise and great Christmas for the kiddies or walking papers and a bad recommendation. No kneecaps need to be touched.
It’s not like we had a few divisions and an airbase there. Our presence was minimal, and our people didn’t do much direct fighting.
These people are effectively Muslims of a different sect. They have weapons and ISIS is effectively neutered and not a threat to them. They have weapons and money weve supplied.
You want perpetual US involvement in conflicts we are guaranteed to lose, both economically and in lives.
Why are you such a monster who wants US citizens slaughtered for the joy of Muslims in the Middle East? When will you put yourself there to stand for your perverse and perverted concern such that you can be the next US victim from your own strategy?
There isnt even a concern with oil or other resources we need.
You just like having US lives snuffed out like Satan does.
Why do Freepers, in the course of expressing an opinion or making an argument feel the need to 'Satanize' the other side of the argument? That's how libs argue. And as with AAABEST last night, I haven't advocated one side or the other on this thread so don't presume a position on my part. I am only advocating civil debate.
Agreed.
“..History will show it to be the right decision IMHO.”
Yes, and the President has crafted an excellent plan for checks and balances throughout the region. I don’t understand the entire plan, but am satisfied he knows what he is doing and I trust him. The only problem with it will not be in the Mideast, it will be in WDC. Those damn Democrats.
No link is out there right now as to troop numbers and that is intentional..
That I can see there are two of us on this board who have spent time in that neighborhood. These troops are advisers and coordinators. They call in air strikes, light targets up with lazes, and do Intel assessments for our team.
I have not been there in a long time but from what I can see nothing much has changed.I like the Kurds and don’t have much use for the Turks but this is simply not a conflict we can not win unless we are willing to go to war in a significant way. This situation goes back a hundred years and the people there don’t forget or get over things. When there is not a war on where the Turks and Kurds have a common enemy, the Kurds have been knows to crank up some terrorist attacks inside of Turkey. I said I liked the Kurds I did not say their hands were clean either.
I like the Kurds and don’t have much use for the Turks but this is simply not a conflict we can win unless we are willing to go to war in a significant way.
I agree with what Trump did but I do not agree with him doing it the way he did. It should have been done quietly.
The one thing I’m drawing a blank on right now is how far back he has pulled our resources.
He can bring them all the way back here and still has the greatest of weapons of all hanging over the Turks heads. The economic sword of Damocles. The reason we have the mightiest military in the world is we can afford it. Trump Doctrine: “Wallet Warfare” not kinetic warfare. If the Turks screw up, boom... an economic JDAM right to their heart and not a shot fired.
Did Trump invite Erdogan to occupy a portion of Syria?
But did Trump authorize Turkey to attack the Kurds?
>>Which ally do we really need or depend upon?<<
Upon review of the facts I’ve changed my mind. I agree with you.
Most eurotrash don’t give a sh!t what happens in their Muslim ghettos. Even the cops won’t go there. The trash raised in European ghettos formed the bulk of ISIS. That’s why they were such pushovers when we finally elected a president who would stand up to them.
When Trump defeated ISIS in Syria a large portion of them threw up their hands thinking that daddy Trump would start taking care of them. Trump saw a problem with American taxpayers wasting American lives to constantly suppress a problem which eurotrash created. Thump asked European nations to take over the roll of prison wardens to ISIS fighters, but they all turned Trump down flat.
Kurds occupy Turkey’s southern border with Syria. Kurds are a giant threat to Turkish democracy. Turkish mass murder from Kurds is not uncommon. Instead of just getting along Kurds demand a homeland country. They even fire rockets into Turkey. Kurds were great allies when it came to fighting Iraq and ISIS, but that was merely because they hate anyone who’s not a Kurd. In the past the U.S. has resisted Turkish drives into Kurdish territory which attempted to kill terrorists who were terrorizing Turkey. I’m no fan of Erdogan’s form of iron-fisted democracy in Turkey, but I think Muslim populations are not well suited to self governance. Erdogan is probably the best we can hope for there.
The reasons for protecting Turkey, eurotrash and the Kurds are now over. Not even the Saudis have turned out to be good allies. It took a while, but I’ve come around to Trump’s way of thinking.
Pull out.
Bad Azz weather.
I’m only hoping the wind is strong enough (they’re saying 50) to blow the leaves off before the snow tears the trees apart.
What Trump is doing here is like breaking an addiction. Yes there will be pain but you just have to do it.
Oh but the Kurds!
Yeah we get that.
Oh but this! And oh but that!
Right, we get it.
Trump is steering us out of our rut to a more sensible place. There will be some bumpy ground along the way but it’s worth it.
And ironically one upside is that once we’ve gone through this reset, we’ll be a more reliable ally. We’ll be less capricious and more predictable once our foreign policy is based squarely on our self interest.
The reality is not the minor deal you make of it.
You would understand how major this change is if you saw it on maps that showed what Erdogan’s “safe zone” will look like, and the destructive impact it will have on the relatively peaceful territory the Kurds put together in Syria, protecting not only themselves but the non-Kurdish Syrians in that area as well.
A twenty mile “pull back” across a large territory only seems small by ignoring most of the major towns in that large area lie within that twenty mile zone, and all are towns the Kurds removed ISIS from; and all are towns Erdogan wants to REMOVE the Kurds from. In other words Erdogan wants to push the Kurds out of the areas major settlements into the no man’s land that is most of the territory.
